Owners of luxury cars (namely BMW, Mercedes, and Audi) are more likely to be jerks according to two new studies

Is this shocking news? Two new studies correlate that owners of expensive cars and namely males in expensive cars tend to have a feeling of superiority over other drivers. Well, of course, do these people have any idea how much work it takes to get into one of these 'expensive' cars?

Jan-Erik Lönnqvist, professor of social psychology, had made the same observation in traffic as many others: Audi and BMW drivers seemed much more likely to ignore traffic regulations and drive recklessly.

“I had noticed that the ones most likely to run a red light, not give way to pedestrians and generally drive recklessly and too fast were often the ones driving fast German cars,” says Lönnqvist of the University of Helsinki’s Swedish School of Social Science.
Apparently when you combine an Audi, Mercedes, or BMW with a male it gets worse:

The answers were unambiguous: self-centred men who are argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and unempathetic are much more likely to own a high-status car such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes.
There is one tidbit people are glossing over in the studies which is that responsible people also own high end cars. It takes self-discipline and work to get to the level of being able to afford the cars in question:

One of the more unexpected results was that another personality type is also drawn to high-status cars: the conscientious. People with this type of personality are, as a rule, respectable, ambitious, reliable and well-organised. They take care of themselves and their health and often perform well at work.
Does owning an expensive car make you a jerk? No. There is a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with it. Also, there are a whole lot more people driving cheap cars than expensive cars out there which simple volume will tell you more jerks drive cheap cars.

Maybe part of it is some people just automatically assume the guy in the new Ferrari with the top down enjoying life is an $#@!?

What is clear is that high end automobiles are still an incredible status symbol and they get a ton of attention whether it be good or bad.

I still say pickup truck drivers are worse. Combine all of those negative traits with the feeling you are invincible in your 5500+ pound truck, and you have just created megadick, ruler of the road.

I have to agree with you. Morons in raised trucks going 85+ with high beams on are something I encounter far more often than pricks in luxury cars.

I read this article while swerving uncontrollably, running red lights, failing to yield to peds and holding my middle finger out of the window of my BMW. (1 series, so not luxury but hey)
