    Why is the 2019 BMW F87 M2 Competition so fat? Manual M2 Competition independent curb weight measured at 3565 pounds

    3565 pounds. If you were not told that was the measured weight of a BMW F87 M2 Competition you might think that is the weight of an F82 M4. Maybe even a BMW E92 M3 DCT. Isn't the point of the 2-Series to have a smaller, lighter, and more traditionally balanced BMW?

    The M2 Competition addresses the main issue of the standard M2 which was the weak N55B30T0 motor. BMW finally gave it a real M powerplant with a detuned version of the M3/M4 S55 at 'only' 405 horsepower and a redline reduced to 7000 rpm.

    It seems the S55 powerplant and its water-air intercooler brings with it a considerable weight penalty:

    That is a manual example. A DCT M2 Competition could conceivably top 3600 pounds.

    Look at this DCT F82 M4:

    Weight: 3579lb (+50lbs full tank) = 3629

    An M2 Competition and M4 weigh almost the same. Depending on options the M2 can actually weight more.

    Sure, ok, the M2 Competition starts $10k less than the M4 but considering it is brand new dealers will not deal on it to the degree they will with an M4.

    Assuming almost equal money, why bother with it?

    The answer might be if you intend to track the M2 Competition and lighten it yourself. At 32XX pounds it becomes something special. As is? It feels like a blown opportunity by the M division.

    3200lbs in this price range and with this size? Good luck seeing anything close to that anymore. With the strict safety regulations, you canít build things light and cheap. Also people are so spoiled with gizmo in their cars that they dont seem to care about the weight penalties.

    Based on another m2 owner who built a club racer m2, he was able to get it down to 2900lbs with extensive weight saving.

    Unfortunately... But then again when have you seen an absolute perfect car that needs no additional modifications? If such cars were made then the aftermarket would be destroyed.

    But then again now a days you can't sell a car unless it has 10,000+ features. One to rub your feet, one to massage your back, one to read you texts to you, and now one to drive for you...

    People don't like driving these days, they like automation and useless features...

    The few people that do like to drive are either priced out and can't afford these things new, or they can afford it but don't have a say in it as the market demands control the car makers.

    All the above still have factory exhaust components and can be removed and replaced, tuning can be optimized for the highest octane available. Carbon fiber parts can still be added to reduce weight, unless it's has a full carbon chassis. The list goes on and on. I don't believe any car is perfect unless it was specifically built to meet maximum performance with absolute disregard to any pricing/profit margin, any laws regarding safety and emissions.

    All of the above still cater to make profits or be cost efficient that's why they still share parts with cars within the manufacturers parent or sub companies. Was every bolt optimized for maximum strength while being as light as possible? Was ever part of the car designed from scratch to save weight while being strong and reliable? No it wasn't ....

    Nobody will build cars and not considering costs and profit. Your requirements for a perfect car are too restrictive to produce such a car. How about Pagani's, Buggati's, or Koenigsegg's cars..? They meet most of your requirements if you allow them to make a profit and stay in business.

    But the whole point of a car that will not need to be altered by the aftermarket doesn't exist, there will always be something to do to it.

    As a general rule lighter is better could be the regulations and emissions equipment but weight seems to be going in the wrong direction

    Sure. You CAN modify them.

    Others feel they are perfect.
