Let's move this to the N54 section since you're looking for mechanical insight.

A couple guys have donor cars they swap stuff from so somebody should be able to help.

Are you putting this powertrain into another BMW, or something else?
A swap into a BMW of approximately the same age won't be too difficult. A swap into a much older BMW or non-BMW will be quite difficult.
At a minimum, you'll need the CAS+complete immobilizer system, DME, EGS (if donor is automatic), and probably the ABS/DSC. There is considerable communication between modules, so you will need to retain as much as possible. Accelerator, shifter, instrument cluster, and probably even the EKP need to come along too.
    What are you swapping into?

I'm by no means expert, but I imagine -- due to the complexity of the DME -- you'll either need to run all the modules or go with any entirely different engine management system ($$).

It's times like this where something like AWRON's electronics shines: https://www.bimmerboost.com/content....r-into-any-BMW

I’d recommend aftermarket ecu as it will be simpler and i think cheaper in the long run. In to see how it works out

Might as well create a new thread then on the project and goals.

This is one I really want to see succeed.
