Schrick aftermarket N54 camshafts on the way from VAC - Specs

Well how about that? Finally an aftermarket camshaft option for the N54 is coming to fruition. After, oh, about a half dozen tries from various parties. Ultimately, in the modern BMW world, if anyone is going to deliver a working performance cam option it is going to be Schrick.

They just took forever. Why did it take so long? Only they know. Maybe now they see the N54 aftermarket is interested in revving out higher especially with a big turbo upgrade and cams address a need in that respect.

Here are the specs from VAC:

They just finished heat treat and will go to final grinding next. I'm told they should be ready to ship by the end of November. There will be 3 profiles. 264 degree, 268 degree low lift, and 268 high lift. Fish batch is 5 sets of each. Price hasn't been released yet.
No pricing yet but as soon as it comes in BimmerBoost will be the first to update you. It's what we do.

Keen for hard specs let alone test results...

Winder how high is high lift vs stock? Just a bump to n55 spec?

And why 264 and 268, 4 degrees makes a huge difference in drivability or hardware or tuning requirements?

    And exhaust cam specs?

Small initial batch will probably sell out straight away

Hmm, Maybe this will help with the flow restriction of the stock heads above 30psi.

Is this only for the intake cam and not available for an exhaust cam?
What is the stock intake cam duration? And lift?

    Correct. And for comparison, N55:

    Intake: 255* / 9.9mm lift
    Exhaust: 261* / 9.7mm lift

N55 has a 0.6mm larger intake valve, and wider VANOS range adjustment too.

It will be pretty difficult to make N55 cams due to valvtronic. Would probably be better to modify the valvetronic parts first to get more lift.

Or simply modify the tune to request more lift/duration as is done on the 370Z with VVEL Click here to enlarge

Well it has max lift already in the stock tune. But I'm sure there will be more to come from the tuning side now that MHD is finally out for the N55.

Have we exhausted VANOS tuning that we're now resorting to changing the cams themselves? Or perhaps I'm overestimating the capability of VANOS tuning.

I'm predicting the price-to-hp ratio of these will be immense and steer a lot of people away. It's hard to justify such parts when you can just add an extra 1psi of boost and yield greater gains. However I'm guessing the cams will also open up some potential of the engine instead of just adding power.

    Definitely looking forward to results!

Yep. But VANOS isn't going to give you the profile you need to get use of more revs.

Nah. Shrick cams have never been super expensive. The problem was always finding a capable tuner. This will separate the men from the boys.

You think any of these guys editing files on forums calling themselves tuners will be able to do a cam tune? Nope. Not until someone else does all the hard work and they get their hands on a file.

Adding boost is not an option for some people due to fueling/misfire/etc limitations of one sort or another. I'm guessing these cams are good for ~25-30whp at peak power @ the same boost level given sufficiently capable turbos. Whether or not it is worth it is entirely subjective... Oh and Sticky I think you overestimate the difficulty of cam tuning on a boosted application like this one, its nowhere near as tricky as on a high bhp/L NA build...
