There were those who criticized Audi for offering 'only' 4.0 liters of displacement and some of those individuals were AMG fanboys who beat their 5.5 liter M157 chests. Well, as time went on it became clear the Audi 4.0 TFSI V8 design is more advanced and efficient than the M157 as detailed in this BoostAddict German turbo V8 architecture comparison.

On paper, this E63 AMG S has more power and torque than the Audi. Keep in mind this is not the more powerful 597 horsepower RS6 'Plus' version. Also keep in mind this E63 AMG S is rear wheel drive and not 4Matic all wheel drive. If it were the 4Matic version weight would be a wash but the E63 is the slightly lighter car here.

The RS6 rips the E63 out of the hole as expected. It holds the lead through the 1/4 mile which the RS6 manages in 11.4 seconds to the E63 12.2 seconds. The E63 gets spanked.

A roll on race or at the very least trap speeds would be great to see considering Top Gear mentions it would be close from a roll so who knows why they only do a race favoring the RS6.

Regardless, Mercedes-AMG is going to the M177 engine architecture for the upcoming W213 E63 AMG S so both the RS6 and E63 will have 4.0 liter twin turbo V8's with similar designs.
