I’ve also started making my own simple syrup from dark brown sugar. Tasty modification to traditional simple syrup (plain sugar based).

Sweet. Let me know what you think. You can get them on Amazon if you can’t find them local.

I also started playing with smoked Old Fashioneds. It’s interesting. Burned some maple and covered it with the glass. Let it set while I prepared everything else. Different for sure. Pretty good though. Going to keep playing with it.

Well, it must be the colder weather helps. I had it straight last night and it's delicious!!! They said the Kavalan FINO is their best but looking at $400ish, my hand suddenly becomes shorter lol

Not really...They have great marketing, no doubt. I would take either Glendronach or Tamdhu over Mac any day.

Macallan is great but it's a big and wide world of whiskey out there...

Just noticed this thread. My two current faves are:

Connemara, great mild peated taste. One of the first peated whiskeys I tried, went on a super smokey bender after this but kept coming back. I like it neat. Always keep an unopened bottle around just in case.

Oban 14, was given a bottle by a friend, it's one of the first whiskeys he recommends to new people -same deal now for me. It may be heresy but I like it neat or over ice.

Macallan is good, we like Red Breast too, really it's a wide world out there, lots of unique flavors to sample. I like whiskey, rum, vodka, lots of things, but my wife mostly only drinks whiskey so I have to keep an eye on our stashes lest she drink all the good stuff. Click here to enlarge

I'm a Four Roses Single Barrel kind of guy. My $53 bottle just rang up at $34. Gotta go back tomorrow pick up a dozen.

Love me an old fashioned whiskey cocktail.

    3. Glenglassaugh PX Sherry Finish
    4. Pappy 23
    5. Caol Ila 18
    6. Yamazaki 15 (i thought the 15 is better than 18)
    7. Nikka From the Barrel
    8. Michter 10
    9. Pappy Rye 13

Better than Pappy 23 for $40?

Never thought this could happen...If you could find this one at local store, please buy a few. Better than Pappy 23 and at $40, says one of the judges from SF World Spirits Competition. And I agreed.

Pappay is like Screaming Eagle in the wine world. It lives off reputation for being expensive and rare. There is no way it is as good as the price commands versus others. Simply impossible.

You must have not read the article. No doubt it's a good whiskey but for $3k? I'll pass. I also bet you that 90% folks can't tell which one better if it was blind taste. If someone gave you a 3k bottle and ask you to drink it, chances are you will say it's good. but if they gave you a few glasses without telling which one is which, that's what this article/the author's point.

Had a taste of this a few weeks ago, it was pretty good IMO. I need to buy a bottle and give it a go.
