    • Past vs. future - Mercedes G63 AMG vs. BMW i8 drag race

Why drag race these two vehicles? Because they are polar opposites. The i8 is all about efficiency and the future. The G63 is just a twin turbo tank with the aerodynamics of a brick. It is kind of fun to put two cars with completely different philosophies against each other.

These cars have completely different powertrains although both have all wheel drive. The i8 can run a 12.3 @ 114 in the 1/4 mile and weighs 3380 pounds. The G63 is roughly a 13.5 @ 106 1/4 mile car and weighs 5940 pounds. 2560 pounds is quite the difference.

Although the G63 has a 5.5 liter M157 motor with 544 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque it just is too damn heavy. The i8 with its instant electric torque gets off the line more quickly and has a greater top end punch.

A good job by the i8 but if it raced a car in its price range it would quite simply get destroyed. Beating a 6000 pound tank in a drag race is nothing to brag about.

As long as it sticks to drag racing SUV's.
