    • Carbahn Autoworks offering BMW S54 (E46 M3) 3.3 liter 12.0:1 compression street rebuild kit - Up to 400 hp naturally aspirated

Great to see this S54 engine rebuild kit from Carbahn Autoworks. If you want an E46 M3 chances are the example will be higher mileage. Well, a fresh motor will not hurt nor will adding a bit of power to the 3.2 liter S54 motor.

Factory output is 333 crank horsepower and they dyno 275 rear wheel horsepower right on the dot on a Dynojet.

The factory compression ratio is 11.5:1 and Carbahn raises it to 12.0:1. They also give the pistons a slight overbore for a 3.3 liter motor (they have 12.5:1 pistons as well).

You can add in their cams (a $3k option) to take power up to the ~390 horse range.

Is it better to go the Carbahn route or go to Schrick for S54 cams for less money? That is for you to decide.

On race gas they certainly get you close to 400 horsepower and in the 375 range without the cams:

The CARBAHN Autoworks S54 3.3L street engine rebuild is blueprinted and balanced, and features CP forged pistons and Carrillo forged connecting rods. We increase the bore by 1mm (which increases the displacement to 3320cc) and bump the compression from 11.5:1 to 12:1. A multi-layer steel (MLS) racing head gasket is also utilized.

Power (without catalytic converters) on 93 octane pump gas is 360HP using J1349 (SAE correction used by OEMs) and 375HP using J607 (the typical aftermarket correction).

Optionally, we offer higher performance camshafts and the corresponding DLC-coated rocker arms. With these additional modifications, power (without catalytic converters) on 93 octane street gas is 375HP using J1349 correction and 390HP using J607.

So it has to bee stroked too? If it is NA, why not the N53?

No, just 1mm overbore. Not much to gain from stroking on this motor.

The N53 is junk in comparison to the S54.

Doh! I apologize as I thought I was on the N54 forum.

So 1mm bore increase taking the displacement from 3.2L to 3.3L makes sense. This might be sweet for the S54, depending on cost,

That's a bit steep for just rods, pistons, and a head gasket. If they through a machined block/crank in there too, that would be more reasonable.
