    • Too little too late? ESS Tuning releases E9X M3 S65 V8 G1/G1+ supercharger kit

The S65 V8 tuning market is not evolving much today. We all basically know the limit of the motor and what superchargers can take the platform to. ~700 whp is pretty much the maximum before you start playing with fire and hoping the block holds together.

So why bring a new kit to a dying market when that market already has plenty of tried and true options? Well, the new ESS G1 head unit has some advantages.

It is smaller, quieter, and more efficient that the popular Vortech head unit options. Mostly V3si and T-Trim superchargers from Vortech dominate the platform.

Here is an ESS G1 with 96.5mm pulley overlaid with an ESS VT2-625 on 91 octane pump fuel:

Essentially, a bit more mid-range for the G1. That is certainly nice considering it is from a lighter package.

Now, the G1 gets up to 576 rear wheel horsepower with a smaller pulley and tuning on 93 octane:

It will benefit greatly from water-meth injection or ethanol tuning as all blowers on the S65 V8 platform do.

Is it worth changing to a G1 or G1+ setup if you are already supercharged? No, the cost is not worth it. You might as well just run ethanol and make more power. If starting from scratch, it is hard to argue against the kit although we need to see pricing.

The blower is said to have much more in it and that will have to remain to be seen. G2 and G3 blowers are on the way as well. Even if it does, it will run into the problem the Vortech blowers do at high boost which is the engine eventually failing.

Should one want to go out on the platform, turbos await.
