    • SPOOL Performance doing the impossible in delivering an N54 HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) upgrade?

This is questionable because nobody in the aftermarket to this date is able to deliver to deliver a BMW N54 HPFP upgrade. There are tuners who can get more out of the factory pump design but many have tried and failed to deliver a true plug and play replacement upgrade.

For something so big to hit the market you would think SPOOL Performance (who are they?) would have many more details to share. For one, how they are doing this, the development time, the cost, the proposed improvement to the direct injection fuel system, etc.

Just a teaser photo and some text?

Maybe this is a real HPFP solution? Then again, maybe we should not get worked up.

Let's hope they bring a solid solution to the table.

My understanding is it is not a new HPFP but a different method to overdrive the stock one. They've been very quiet about it, but a few people on other forums and FB have been testing it.

If it can overdrive enough to reduce the need for most PI setups (<700whp on full E85) and comes in at a price better than the single shotgun, I think it will be a winner.

What is the new overspinning method?

Click here to enlarge Not sure exactly, but my hunch is that they are changing the rate with a piece of billet metal so it stays mounted and run via the same method, just overdriven.

I do recall a post they made previously about changing the entire gear that drives it, which I think would have required a new chain as well. It seems like this is an iteration of that - but rather than the entire gear, just the piece on the pump that spins. Pretty novel idea if that's what it is. Just not sure how much they can overdrive it by. Hopefully we'll know more from them this week. I hate teasers - just keep it quiet until its released.

Taking this info from another forum thread: someone said it does overspin the HPFP similar to the VTT shotgun setup, but is instead driven off the stock lobe internally (like a stock HPFP) instead of a bracket and belt setup. Seems to be unclear of how much it's overdriven or how it'll compare to the shotgun or the new M18 HPFP setup that's coming out in the future.

I saw SpoolPerformance as a LPFP upgrader but then they released an ignition coil upgrade on par with BimmerLife and Precision Racewerks which has been gaining traction -- it was used with that stripped out drag build sendit_e90. They also have a flex-fuel unit. They keep a low profile but I haven't heard any negative reviews.

Spool is a company that makes its living knocking off products not too different from many vendors on the N54 landscape. (See their coil upgrade. They took the PR upgrade made the coils red, and called it their own) This is nothing more than a planetary gearset that overdrives the stock HPFP.

We have RPM data for our shotgun of course, and for this. Our system spins the pump faster for more fuel flow, and it does so with only two items that are RPM limited the bearings themselves. While install may be a little easier for this. You have now introduced a gear set which has to be of questionable quality to be charging what they are charging for it. Lets see how a low quality transmission lasts at high RPM for thousands of miles. It may hold up, but only time will tell...

        Like this-
To illustrate how it could work.
        Interesting concept
        Small gears, reliability?

I seriously doubt this will last any decent time without needing maintenance. I feel like it will end up failing prematurely if you don't replace the grease in the gearbox every 10k.

It definitely will be interesting to see one of them popped open... really there is so much to know and so few answers at this point.

The facebook group(PNW N54) I'm apart of has some of these reserved for the members. They claim it's over driven 3x.

It’s not like the pr coil kit is complex. Sheesh

It's more a matter of character than complexity, isn't it?

Its annoying but that's the world we live in these days, people knock of your ideas and change them a little and call it their own.

There is a vendor back in 2017 that took a lot of the ideas and started to manufacture them in china and now they are one of the biggest vendors here, why because people are tight arses

if they can at least make manufacturer one that doesn't break within 50k miles that would be nice

The owners are younger now and have less money on average.

The customers I see businesses deal with are older just they don't know quality if it hit them on the arse and think they can get the same for less which usually comes at a sacrifice of strength or longevity but truly convince them selves it's the same thing.

Not many people build cars like they use to or keep them more than 3 to 5 years so I can sort of understand.

When I was buying a 335 a few months ago for development purposes I looked at maybe 100 cars and you could really see the poor quality of builds and while the one I settled for wasn't the best looking but it had all the right parts, serviced by the right mechanics and had all the receipts for the parts he brought.

I took the car for one spin and paid on the spot.

Yes agreed owners are younger and the secondhand market for n54s have attracted a crowd of people who are looking for cheap power at a cheap price as these cars are now real value for money... The cheaper the part and more power it makes the more attractive it is for the newer generation of owners.

Further to that this car was also shipped to many 3rd world or developing countries.. That been said these countries currencies are so weak that it becomes extremely expensive to import quality products... For example in Africa a quality valve cover will cost 16 times the dollar base price excl tax and shipping.... Logically speaking if the dollar base price is lower it will attract more interest...
