    • What you need to be aware of regarding Wedge Performance/Ken Atkinson dangerous tuning practices and blown motors

Before we begin, everyone blows motors. Everyone. It is not always the fault of the tuner. It could be a hardware failure or even factory defect. In this case though, there is ample evidence that the tuner in question has dangerous tuning practices which have resulted in several blown engines due to said unsafe tuning.

Need proof? Good. That is what BimmerBoost will provide.

By the way, this is not a new topic by any means. It is well known on this forum and in various BMW tuning circles that Wedge/Ken learned on other people's motors. Read this thread from 2015 if you like with 15 pages of details.

Not much has changed in 2019.

So what happened that suddenly Wedge Tuning is in the spotlight when it shouldn't be? He is going after RFP Tuning slandering him online. Wedge is known to say RFP suffers from PTSD and is a terrible tuner. Frankly, insulting someone online who served this country is despicable at best and cowardly at worst.

Why the insults? Because RFP is giving tuning away for free. Literally, for free. The gravy train is over. You can go and download RFP maps right here that can potentially be much better than what you buy from Wedge Tuning. Even if you do not come to that conclusion RFP still provides free tuning materials so you can learn to tune yourself and cut the middleman out entirely. Who would be angry with that? The ultimate middle man Ken Atkinson.

      Here's proof:

PLEASE BE AWARE!!!I usually don't like to call out other people but this is absurd. This log was sent to me by someone who is very concerned. The current tune is not simply "unsafe" it's extremely dangerous. If you look closely you shall see that the rail pressure (HPFP) is crashing, LPFP still maintains the pressure BUT... Take a look at the timing. There are no corrections. The only reason there would be no corrections is if the KNOCK TABLES we're extremely relaxed (desensitized).

Boost never hits the target and trims (STFT bank 1 and bank 2) are completely maxed out and in dangerous area.

This tune is a prime example of how the motor blows up and then the "tuner" blames the owner.

      More:

Let's begin with his shit tuning and Customer service. I would like for customer to remain private as they don't want any drama.

Example 1. *********: They blamed the engine but this is how it happened. After this lean run the car couldn't go past 6000rpm without misfiring anymore. Continuing the problem they did the pulls next morning and due to all the lean condition, timing shit show of afr and crashing HPFP lifted his head and destroyed his bearings. The other point of concern is how low the HPFP pressure, how lean the car and how much the timing and boost - MEANING the knock sensors are reduced to nothing which is very dangerous for one, and two there should be HUGE correction on Ign going on to protect motor. However as you shall see..... barely anything, concluding that knock sensors are desensitized extensively. Nadeem tried to get warranty from MMP but tune was shit so warranty got denied and that is where Ken blamed MMP for bad motor to protect himself. Logs say otherwise!
      More:

This is recent Log I have gotten today. The person's car is dangerously close to permanent damage "it will fucking blow- I said that".

The problem here is same old patter, HPFP afr AND the usually suspect... minimal timing corrections even in dangerous condition. Why? You may ask... Knock tables are relaxed quiet a bit as well.

The response to this from Ken was: "Get the O2 sensor readers and different boost controller" After months of no Support (since Sep 2018) he finally did get the JB4 and few other things .... Nothing changed, tune is still shit.
      Log:

Same car before going to JB4:

Another Fresher log. This one I think is "OK" but again HPFP crash under full boost and almost no timing corrections which means knock sensitivity decreased heavily:

Some might say, hey, that is all old stuff. No, this is the more recent alarming trends. No doubt there are good tunes out there by Wedge but the problem is the bad tunes he is too lazy to fix or care about. Basically, if things go wrong it's not his problem and the support is terrible.

Here, read how it went for someone trying to get support:

      Log:

As already stated, this is nothing new. Plenty of people said RFP was just making things up so there you have a bit of evidence and there is more where that came from should it prove necessary. Plus RFP certainly didn't make up the thread from four years ago detailing these same issues. A coincidence? Not at all.

There are plenty of reputable tuners to choose from. Why choose one with terrible service who doesn't care about your motor? Why choose someone who learned on other people's motors?

At the very least here is some evidence so you can make your own informed decision. The tribalism with tuners is very prevalent on social media and should be challenged just as you read. Be careful...

You have much to learn Wedge is not credible. That's not an opinion but a fact. There's a long line of cars he's works on being tuned incorrectly and PLAINLY DANGEROUS.

I looked at a log on N54tech several months ago where Wedge had one of his 15 timing curves on. I SAW 20 TIMING CORRECTIONS IN THE LOG. THAT MOTOR WAS IN PIECES.. unfortunately I didn't look the logs until after his MOTOR was BLOWN UP.

That's one of 2 personal stories that only I personally know about. No one else worked with the two people I helped so I can categorically PUT 2 BLOWN MOTORS on him that no one else can count.
      Or don't. Up to you.

And you want to talk about Wedge reducing the knock stuff?
The flash tuning logic doesn't proactively cut boost due to fueling issues. AFR will run 18:1, low fuel pressure 40psi, high fuel pressure 600psi, fuel trims bank to bank 20% apart, etc. that's why we invented the extra JB4 safety systems in the first place to get out ahead of these things before something breaks.

Recently added a low pressure safety to the single turbo firmware at 49psi. Probably will add it to the twin turbo firmware soon too.

How about we all just get ourselves some JB4's, and not put straight E85 on a tune not made for it with an ecu that's for some reason more than happy to go 18.1 lean without cutting the motor?

This all reminds me back in the E46 MS43 days when a certain someone got mad at another someone, when he figured out how to do an EWS delete and release it for free. People get mad when you slow down their money train.

Only OG's will understand this but you nailed the analogy.

Now bring up some resistor tuning talk for real nostalgia...

        LOLOLOLOLO
Open a tune and take a look. Knock sensors are stock values
There is a reason why the tunes are unlocked

Careful, I reveal too much information (that's already out there) and some tuners are gonna start putting me on the blacklist!

*cough 1.2k resistor on yellow wire *cough rescale *cough maf tables

Or Audi B4 S5 maf sensor and call it a day.
