Motec and AEM are advertising a new "tuner" package that may allow the end user to build a transmission control strategy...still waiting on this functionality to be released to assess feasibility.

The complexities are controlling the 3 shift solenoids and 4 pressure control valves in the ZF transmission in a way that gives smooth shifts at all power levels.
I'll preface this question by saying I don't know a single thing about transmission control strategies or anything beyond basic operations of an auto.

Given that, how do you avoid landing on a strategy that will cause a great deal of wear & tear? I suppose that I'm speaking more to the clutch packs - you could gain the ability to the modulate the solenoids but how do you won't be unnecessarily slipping the clutches with a given strategy? You would not have the ability to measure % of lock-up, correct, such that you could modify the strategy to cure too much slip? Or, at least, you can't monitor % lock-up from the directly within the trans, correct?

    It's actually pretty easy.

The transmission has both input and output speed sensors, and the controller will know what the difference is based on the selected gear. The OEM ECU actually has a closed loop control strategy for both the release of the previous gear, and engagement of the next gear to smooth out the transition.

For me, it will be about a combination of setting up the engagement and disengagements, as well as cutting torque from the engine or causing it to blip a little bit.

So to answer your question more directly: I will know exactly when there is slip, and by how much. Then either the line pressure, engagement timing, or engine torque can be adjusted as required.

    Thanks

I actually prefer for people to find out about that project on their own. I've never really advertised where the story is, yet I've got hundreds of thousands of hits on it. Click here to enlarge

For now, I focus on the present here.

And my M3 will probably be 3 generations behind. But that's ok.

    One major decision made.

It took a while to weight everything out, but I've enjoyed the process, and hope to share a bit of it publicly shortly.

For now, there's something really fun on the way.

One not so fun thing: I've sent my camera and main lens to Nikon for service. I realize that 6 years isn't that long for a Pro DSLR to be in use, but I've absolutely hammered mine carrying it around the world probably 20 times. (That's not a typo) It's started to show it's age, and I'm now experiencing focusing problems, so it's time for a little R&M. The 24-70 I use also has some physical damage to it, so I sent it off as well.

What this means is that my adventures for the next little bit will be un-documented...at least with my usual gear.
