    666 fabrication N54 intake

here are some pics of the intake....I have a customer running around with one now. Funny but a noob tech at Bayside BMW here $#@!ed about it, saying it was going to affect his work trying to replace the HPFP on the car when it died...he remarked that it looked like it was made from Home Depot parts. I made a few phone calls to Bayside and my friend called in the general manager there and chewed him out big time, and the car was given to a master tech who banged the job out in 2 hours with no questions asked. I really loathe these noobs that come straight out of Lincoln Tech, thinking they know everything and that 'the N54 needs to run stock, any aftermarket part is bad for it' Click here to enlarge

Intake looks different, that is for sure. Going to put it in its own thread.

This intake was posted on another forum June last year, nothing other than pictures and criticism. Never heard anything after that, was this just a one off?

I have sold one intake to a customer of mine, pricing is comparable to the Injen intake at $350...keep in mind these are hand made, not churned out in huge batches.

He didn't want to post any results til we hit the dyno, nd it made around the same HP as a DCI did, give or take 3-4hp. IMO I think it's better asthetically than the DCIs...I do sell them for him and I can put the word in if more people are interested.

I see, so same HP as DCI but added audible sensations.

Great whoosh from the intake! I don't see people purchasing this over Dual cone intakes though, unless it were a full CAI, which is not the case.

I don't see the point of all these crazy looking intakes, I think just a DCI will yield more power, since it doesn't have have many curves in the piping restricting the flow...

The idea is to get the filter away from the engine. The hotter your AIT's the harder you're making your turbo's work. Keep in mind that the air is being sucked through the intake pretty forcefully, so mild bends and curves aren't really going to affect anything.

It doesn't matter where you pick up the air in the engine bay because once it hits the turbos its going to get heated up no matter what temperature it comes in, the only way you are going to cool the air is by getting a better IC or Meth. CAI's only work good on NA engines.

And yes the bends and curves are going to affect the way the turbos suck in the air, the more restriction the more stress on the turbos, I picked up 10hp by switching from an AFE stage II to a DCI HKS foam style intake, less restriction, less curves, less bends and quicker spooling on the turbos...

This thread is not intended to prove whos is better or why a DCI does this or that. This is merely stating that there are other intakes out there and if you want something else than a DCI then this is am option.

The other thing people forget is that turbos heat up the air a given amount for each psi. If you supply the turbos with colder air, they work less and thus heat up the charge less...which puts less demand on the intercooler, and still results in lower temps across the board, even if it is 15 degrees less. Every little bit helps.

If my logic is flawed you can correct me, but cold air intakes are not limited to NA cars.

I think there is two things that might make the CAI be less efficient than a DCI. First of all, at speed the air in the engine bay is constantly flushed by the speed of the car so the air is only warm while being stationary. Second the turbos are very sensetive to resistance, so even a straight 3" pipe with no bends adds resistance that forces the turbos to work harder.

I think best way of testing this is probably to do vbox measurements (trap speed) to see if there is differences while driving. Only looking at IAT's isn't enough you also need to know how hard the turbos are working.

If it doesn't matter then why do lower intake temps (cold weather) have such a large effect on power?

I can't understand how that would take any longer than 30 minutes to install... much less 2 hours lol.
