    Libya edges toward civil war

This chaos seems to continue to spread: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110221/...libya_protests

After anti-government unrest spread to the Libyan capital of Tripoli and protesters seized military bases and weapons Sunday, Moammar Gadhafi's son went on state television to proclaim that his father remained in charge with the army's backing and would "fight until the last man, the last woman, the last bullet."

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, in the regime's first comments on the six days of demonstrations, warned the protesters that they risked igniting a civil war in which Libya's oil wealth "will be burned."
What kind of leader would threaten the people and try to destroy their resources to stay in power?

Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Morocco, Algeria, and Djibouti, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Iran - and now Lybia, possibly the worst dictatorship in the lot?

No matter what the short-term outcomes turn out to be - but let's hope for the best anyway, against history and probability - the one most important thing that all this shows is: it's possible to have no weapons and yet no fear.

I hope other mid-east nations learn that soon.

On a sidenote, F1 will start off the season in Bahrain in 3 weeks.
They are seriously looking into this to see if this race still can continue because of the political situation and the possibility to protest durring the event.

    Quote Joe Saward's blog:
The British government has bowed to pressure and revoked licences for arms exports to Bahrain. The French have done the same. At the same time Bahrain’s King Hamad has asked his eldest son, Crown Prince Salman, to try to resolve the current political crisis. US President Barack Obama says that he deeply concerned about the violence in Bahrain while British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “I am alarmed by reports of soldiers firing on protestors in Bahrain. This is an extremely worrying development. The circumstances of what happened are not yet clear, but I call on the Bahrain authorities to avoid violence and the use of excessive force and to exercise restraint. The right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly must be respected. The Bahraini Government should move quickly to carry out its commitments to transparent investigations into recent events and any alleged human rights abuses.
“I welcome the proposal of the King of Bahrain that the Crown Prince should initiate a dialogue between the different communities. Bahrain should take further steps on reforms that meet legitimate aspirations for greater social and political freedoms.”
In the current circumstances it is difficult to understand how anyone can even consider holding a Formula 1 race in this country in three weeks from now. If the violence continues or if the security clampdown succeeds in stopping the people taking to the streets, then no-one in F1 would be safe travelling to Bahrain as the Grand Prix would offer such an opportunity for protesters to make their point that there would either be violence if the authorities tried to stop them going to the circuit, or the race would be held behind a cordon of tanks and military personnel.
Neither scenario is good for Formula One.
In any case, the teams, promoter and other interested parties, such as TV companies, will have trouble getting any insurance for their crews and equipment… There is clearly a case for force majeure and while some money will be lost for those who are shipping equipment to Bahrain, rather than flying it in and out, it is probably better for F1 if none of its equipment goes into Bahrain at the moment, as it is needed just a few days later in Australia.
There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works

Violence escalate, I think Gadhafi is going to have a hell of a fight on his hands: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110221/...libya_protests

Libyan protesters celebrated in the streets of Benghazi on Monday, claiming control of the country's second largest city after bloody fighting, and anti-government unrest spread to the capital with clashes in Tripoli's main square for the first time. Moammar Gadhafi's son vowed that his father and security forces would fight "until the last bullet."

Even as Seif al-Islam Gadhafi spoke on state TV Sunday night, clashes were raging in and around Tripoli's central Green Square, lasting until dawn Monday, witnesses said. They reported snipers opening fire on crowds trying to seize the square, and Gadhafi supporters speeding through in vehicles, shooting and running over protesters. Before dawn, protesters took over the offices of two of the multiple state-run satellite news channels, witnesses said.

two air force pilots refused to bomb the people

Two Libyan Air Force pilots defected to Malta on Monday after being asked to bomb Libyan citizens, a Maltese government source said. The pilots' fighter jets were armed with rockets and loaded machine guns, the source said. Malta is a short flight from Libya.

Glad to see teh fighter pilots would not just mindlessly follow orders.

Bomb your own people because they are tired of your abuse? When that gets to the people all the dictator did was weaken his own goals.

Seems odds are good that Gadhafi is going to hang:

The scope of Moammar Gadhafi's control was whittled away Wednesday as major Libyan cities and towns closer to the capital fell to the rebellion against his rule. In the east, now all but broken away, the opposition vowed to "liberate" Tripoli, where the Libyan leader is holed up with a force of militiamen roaming the streets and tanks guarding the outskirts.

In a further sign of Gadhafi's faltering hold, two air force pilots — one from the leader's own tribe — parachuted out of their warplane and let it crash into the eastern Libyan desert rather than follow orders to bomb an opposition-held city.
The revolutions just continue to spread: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110224/...mi_ea/ml_libya

Iran can do it but it wont be easy, the Iranian army is so brainwashed that they might not defect as easily as libyans and tunisians.

This could be a perfect opportunity to prove to the Arab/Persian world how truly dedicated to democracy America and Americans are.

Don't be hypocritical, even if the elected government isn't friendly, at least it should be democratic.
