    Here is the engine/horsepower evolution of every generation of BMW M3 - E30, E36, E36, E92, F80 dyno overlay

This awesome dyno overlay comes to us from our friends at Evolve Automotive. Now, note, this is a Dyno Dynamics and it is set to correct at the crank. Everything looks about right until you get to the F80 M3 which BMW rates at 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.

The Evolve torque figure for the S55 motor of the F80 M3 exceeds the BMW rating but their horsepower figure curiously is barely any higher. The other M3's are all right on the dot which they should be as they follow the Dynojet 15% loss rule. When BMW went turbo, they started to sandbag.

The S55 turbo engine in the F80 M3 is criminally underrated. It's essentially a 500 horsepower motor and its wheel output matches its claimed crank output. Why the S55 is not showing as large of an advantage here is a curiosity and we will ask Evolve about it. The torque nose diving past 5000 rpm on the load bearing dyno could explain it.

Still a very cool overlay to see.

    Red Line: E30 M3 S14 2.3 I4
    Green Line: E36 M3 S50B32 3.2 I6
    Blue Line: E46 M3 S54 3.2 I6
    Orange Line: E92 M3 S65 4.0 V8
    Purple Line: F80 M3 3.0 I6

Seeing as how traction is a serious issue and not many people have been able to actually clock advertised 0-60 times, haha is right.

Them s55s make some serious power. I would hesitate to buy one if I could afford one, just because of the hub crank issues that's a scary time bomb to have. How much power have people been able to pull out of the s14 in NA form?

Only thing keeping me from an M4 also, crank hub issues. So I'm looking at M2s.....

That is not a stock s54! They make that at the flywheel, not the wheel. Was this a engine dyno?

He means a bench dyno I think where they test the engine.

    It's a corrected Dyno Dynamics.

You realize it's the ugliest curve of the bunch that drops the hardest up top, right?

Ugliest to you maybe. I think the s65 line is hideous. I don't get why you're so wrapped up about redlines. I spend 1% of my time at redline, the other 99% leaving stoplights or accelerating at low RPMs so the s55 curves are the best to me.

No, the ugliest. It starts to dip at 4200 rpm. Even the old S14 manages a prettier torque curve and pulls harder to redline.

You're just impressed with peak torque figures and not the actual shape of the curve.

That's fine. I like the best base to build a car that will crush others from a light or on the highway.

I don't know why you don't understand that if you move the S65 torque curve up not only will you have more torque but you will have more power over a much wider range. That actually means far more area under the curve.

Dude. Theven s55 makes 75 more HP at 4k than the S65. It makes more power everywhere. Peak power at 8400 is pointless

You're just not processing what I'm writing. I'm not arguing the S55 doesn't make more power and torque stock for stock.

The S65 actually has the broader and better curve. Torque at 2500 rpm means what exactly? It also takes a nosedive. If you like torque around town get a diesel maybe?

An S65 can outpace the S55 with far less boost and even without turbos.

Is the S55 better than a Gallardo 5.2 V10 because it makes more torque stock?

I'm not surprised you resort to child abuse when you can't form an argument.
