    PAW offers N54 ported cylinder head upgrade - $3995

    PAW Motorsport is offering a cylinder head upgrade for N54 based BMW vehicles. There is a substantial gain in port flow velocity without a sacrifice in low lift situations. Flowbench charts show an increase of about 35% with gains from 161 cfm to 227 cfm. Both intake and exhaust ports have been ported and polished along with modified intake and exhaust valves. The claimed power gains with the head alone are in the 40 hp range. Charts and pictures are below.

    Expect before and after results on a PAW DCT N54 project car in the next few weeks. For those interested in this upgrade there is a core charge in the $2800 range which obviously is refunded when the core is received.

    Very impressive. What Im curious about is the pricing..is this like a stage 1 setup? Or is this the only package they have available?

    Was there no need to do any unshrouding around the valves in the combustion chamber area?

    I have yet to see any of this info pop up on the other forum. I like seeing it here. Straight and to the point, not a bunch of stupid $#@!ing questions about group buys that they will never participate in, not believing the hp gain, too expensive, etc etc.

    We have a good amount of info not available anywhere else and that will only continue to grow, you have to come here to see it.

    PAW is going to use this upgrade on a car also getting the RB's, can't wait to see the final result.

    beyond 20psi this head is going to be key. Still have those stupid hydroformed exhaust manifolds though.

    So if you were at 20psi instead of 28"WC, would the % cfm increase over stock be around the same or would it differ greatly?

    Matt, I don't see a problem with the exhaust manifold. The strong point is that it is compact not wasting energy outside and stii probably flows what is needed.

    Yes. It's not tubular & equal length but I still like the design since it could be a lot worse and it needs to fit in the tight place. I don't think we can enhance it in any way.

    Let me get this right it's 3995 then when you send in your head it's 2800? Or 3995+ 2800 core charge/ refundable.. The second one sounds more like it

    We don't have data on which one is a bigger restriction. However, PAW seems to believe exhaust side was so restrictive that it needed upgraded valves, whereas your shop did not upgrade the exhaust valves. To me it seems that the exhaust side is still restrictive even after upgrading the exhaust valves. However to be sure, we would need to have two heads with different porting strategies regarding intake/exhaust port flows and compare the results in dyno or standing mile.

    correct me if I'm wrong but I think labor should be around 20 hours...think books quote 18.8 with all the little bmw special tools so I guess if you don't have them it could take quite a bit longer
