What are the options for upgrading the automatic transmission in N54 cars?

Some of the cars are making pretty good torque and probably reaching the limit of what the trans can hold especially those running nitrous on top.

What options are there for upgrading the transmission?

Yes, but this thread is specifically for the N54 steptronics.

Well, I wonder if one could get a torque converter upgrade and bigger trans cooler. That might offer 'some' help but may not necessarily improve torque handling capacity as that is more dependent on the gearset and shaft strengths.

from what i have understood the torque converter locks when accellerating so it can hold a TON of torque . its inbetween shifts that you gotta be careful.

Depends how far you want to go with building it. Just upgrading the clutch discs is a couple grand and as far as most people will need to go.

is it the same ZF you can find in 645i?
if it is i know a guy with a tuned 645i , Stroked and supercharged and it makes about +800nm , and ZF told him the trans will hold up with that kind torque

with all drag racing and 600 plus newton pushed by lots of people worldwide for about 2 years we would have already seen broken transmission IMHO. We will see (lets hope not for my account) with the turbo upgraded cars if the transmission will hold .....

I don't think that's their official statement. N54 AT is rated below the full bolt ons tune level. In practice it seems to hold well though. The general practice is to provide figures they can guarantee.

I don't understand why there aren't any torque converter upgrade options as this point.

Don't fix what isn't broke. So far we can't even make the power to break the transmission while properly operated, why would there be a market for it? Once it becomes a part everybody starts breaking or is seen as a weak link in our capacity for more power then the desire for this will occur. I'm not saying it won't break, just saying thats why there isn't any real demand for it.

The limit has been exceeded and those with nitrous may be interested.

We know it has to come sooner or later so might as well get on it now which will likely lead to lowered production costs and increased competition later on which benefits us.

I think the only problems i've heard of have to do with too much tq between shifts and the transmission skipping gears on an upshift. Holding power between shifts would definitely be a place to improve, but I think when driven with this in mind we could avoid breaking... The transmission locks up after 2500 rpm's Ive read and should be able to hold a lot of torque regardless.

One or two transmissions that fail whilst running nitrous is not grounds for eminent trans upgrades. Trust me, the transmission is strong; after what I saw people do to the AT in the 135/335 and how your average person drives it with FBO it is ridiculous they can take this kind of abuse. I think there needs to be better shifting capability via a torque converter or valve body upgrade; the gearset seems to be able to handle a lot of torque as does the shaft.

Of course not, but hopefully there will be options available soon.
