Well, trying to fight a neat war is the problem. If it really came down to a battle of survival they could annihilate the enemy. Problem is, then civilians die.

Yes trying to fight a neat war is a problem! Not killing takes way more training and is way harder then killing. It is too easy to wipe out a city or town and shred everybody regardless. The biggest challenge is to apply force correctly at the critical point in the battle. Now, here is the problem. In an Urban fight the critical point is not always kinetic or immediately definable. Soft power, finesse, and winning over the population is the key.

Truly, total war favors Israel. But you know this, I know this, and any enemy knows this. Why risk annihilation when you can just win by a slow death of a thousand cuts?

Total annihilation wont happen to hezbollah just like you pointed out very accurately, they are heavily entrenched in the civilian population. The battle is a battle from within, if the people can rise up against hezbollah (which is very unlikely because if you attempt something like this you are immediately executed or jailed) then that is a guarantee for peace.

Iranian people are too smart to have to listen to a monkey as their dictator. They need to take the momentum that is going on in Egypt and Tunisia and do the same.

You are excatly right! Is he perfect? No, but he sure has brought stability to Egypt and has had peace with Israel for 30 years. BTW, he has also kept the M1 production line going when we stopped making them. It is crazy that the U.S. does not produce any new tanks - we just recondition the old ones and improve the systems. Anyway, the Iranians are way too cultured and educated to put up with the little dictator's comedy for much longer. The potential for Iran is limitless.

Democracy is not always a concept that finds purchase in other countries. I found quite a bit of longing for Saddam when I was advising the Iraqi Army. Strength and power are respected and I have found that in the Middle East if you are percieved as weak or soft you are through. You make concessions and introduce liberal policies than you just get crapped on and cursed for being a weak sister. Then it's like well we would rather have electricity and free gasoline than the ability to vote. Then you are back to square one.
