BMW looking into 5 series coupe and cabrio

A tip from the usual BMW insider Scott27 brought to our attention that in a recent product and planning meeting, BMW bosses were looking into the possibility of creating a Coupe and Convertible version of the BMW 5 Series.
Before we begin, we would like to mention that the news are highly speculative, and beside Scott’s track record, we cannot simply accept these as confirmed news.
This will not be BMW’s first attempt to build a convertible variant based on the 5 Series bodystyle. In 1989, Motorsport engineers developed an E34 M5 convertible, with two lengthened front doors and seating for four. It really did come very close to production – a price of 50,000 GBP was agreed, and space was even booked at the Geneva Motor Show. But one week before its intended debut, BMW “killed” it, believing it would have led to a demand for non-M 5 Series convertibles, which might have dented drop-top 3 Series sales.”

Makes no sense, that is the purpose the 6 serves.

This is just some random rumor, I put no stock into it.

BMW 6 Series’s Successor To Be Named 5-Series Coupe

BMW could make a significant renaming in its range with the launch of a succesor for six series. Model would be a coupe derivate and convertible of the current 5 Series.
Although it has already become an iconic design for BMW, the 6 Series could change his first name with the launch of the new generation. Unofficial sources speak of a repositioning and rename as derivate of 5 Series. Expected to be named 5 Series coupe and convertible, the model will probably adopt the stylistic characteristics of the segment E sedan .
Even so, the name 6 Series wouldn’t be dropped , the name will serve to identify the four-door serial version of the concept Gran Coupe , Shooting Brake three-door variant, seen as a competitor for Gran Turismo segment.
Decision of renamed the 6 series, comes from the desire to align the supply of current 5 Series to the smaller brothers 1 Series and 3 Series, which also enjoys coupe and convertible version. Another reason for which BMW hopes the new derivatives is the intention to compete with the Mercedes E-Class coupe and convertible.

Moreover, the Bavarians will sell the two new models, using the success that currently enjoy the 5 Series, the coupe and convertible styling will be seriously inspired by the F10 sedan. In convertible model case, the difference will be made by the fabric material of the roof. The two variants of the 5 Series will debut on the European market just over two years, in 2012.

It would make more sense this way. The 6 series is way overpriced to be a E Class Coupe or A5 competitor and way to cheap to compete with a CL550.
Best thing they could do is to stop making it.

Could make a change... no point to it, doubt it will happen as they have this entire generation to deal with.

The 6 series is the E class coupe competitor.

The A5 is more of a coupe version of the A4, so it is more of a 3 series competitor.

Yea, more like the coupe A6 but still what does this have to do with the 5 or 6 series?

a coupe version of the 5 won't save them at all. I say they should make up for the 5 with the 6 but they have a lot of making up to do.

I think it's too late anyway. Merc > BMW this year and next.

I am with you on that. I am just saying that the 6 series seems to be in limbo. An M5 coupe would turn things around since they wont put a TT V8 in the m3.

What is it aimed at? really. A

person looking for a luxury GT wont buy it having the CL as an option unless they don't have the money to get the CL.

The 6 series is too expensive for A5 and E class buyers.

What is the 650i base price vs. the E550 coupe?

Secondly, the CL is a different kind of car. It is more of a Bentley GT competitor, big, plush, heavy, expensive. The 6 is not its market.

The 6 is almost a full ton lighter, cheaper, and more of a drivers car.

Not necessarily, the RS5, M3, C63, those are the logical choices in that segment.

Anyways BMW will do what they find appropriate the history of the cars doesn't matter. I for one would buy a M5 coupe if it is produced.

That's what I'm saying. I don't see much of a price difference either.

People would expect an M5 coupe anyway.

I will take the E550 Coupe all day long. Every time I see a white one coming down the road, it makes me want one so bad.

The front of the new 6-series does not look good at all.

Oh and the E-coupe cost less than the E-sedan. You hear that BMW, the coupe cost less than the sedan, you idiots?! 3-series pricing is $#@!ed up.
