    Dinan + JB4

    Hey guys,

We get a lot of emails from Dinan or other lower boost flash tunes asking what we can do to boost their output a bit. Normally, we suggest going back to OEM tuning. But that isn't always practical due to the cost to flash back to stock, etc. So we've made a low boost JB+ to add a psi or so. Now with the JB4 they have a new option. Click here to enlarge

The JB4 can basically filter out the flash tuning and deliver them normal JB4 like performance. We have a couple guys testing it now and it works very well. Same principle that is used with the 335is, BMW power kit, etc. Getting a flash, being disappointed with the performance, and throwing a JB4 on top of it is not the cheapest way to go but it is a viable option.

This attached log shows the Dinan target and the revised JB4 target.

Interesting! So if I have flashed my N54 with a dinan tune...and I throw on the JB4 - it will literally disregard the flash and perform on par with a similar car running a JB4?

Also, any options in the JB4 that let you override the flash or erase it? (I know it sound a bit silly)

Exactly! It will mostly ignore the flash tuning.

No plans to have the JB4 reflash the DME.

Wait a minute.... if I get a Dinan tune, I can't return to stock other than by paying to reflash it? Who reflashes back to stock -- the dealer?

You pay the dealer $150 or so to flash it back to stock. Adding insult to the $2000 injury. Click here to enlarge But it happens. We have maybe 20 customers who have/had Dinan and gave up on it wanting more performance. Most have flashed back to stock and gone JB3. Some did a JB+ on top of it. Now there is another option. Ouch, and I presume the dealer then flags your car as modified and unwarrantable... Never knew that....

This is pretty cool and fairly useful.

Compatible with any flash, right? This kind of seems like a best of both worlds type thing.

I've always read that stacking tunes/flashes is risky and thought to be a big no-no?

Maybe a no-no to stack a full blown tune on a flash as opposed to a TMAP based tune?

    Do I have it right?

Fair enough but how can you prevent the tune/flash from reacting to the other ? Wouldn't that create a cluster$#@! ?

Just looking for some info thats all.

Basically the JB4 takes control of boost, the flash runs air/fuel and timing, as it would either way. The fuel trims are less aggressive in the JB4 as the DME is already adding more fuel.

Are there certain flashes it will be more or less compatible with? Essentially, will it be able to take control of boost for every flash and be compatible with anything out there?

You said it depends on the circumstance so I am just wondering if there are certain circumstances that are more desirable than others.

each one has to be tested to see what they are doing with duty cycle and whether the throttle is properly mismanaged. We can fix some mismanagement but if it's off the charts bad the OEM flash is strongly suggested.

Once again, Terry shows why his products are so highly regarded among BMS owners. Way to think outside the Box on this, Terry.
