Caught driving 200 km/h on public roads - $235,000 Ferrari taken away

A 2008 F430 Scuderia and a 2008 M6 were caught speeding up Mount Seymour in British Columbia, hitting speeds of up to 200 km/h (about 126 miles per hour) in a 60 km/h zone, as well as narrowly missing a mother who was walking with her two children. As you'd expect, the cars were impounded, but the provincial government is taking things a step further. Both vehicles are going to be sold. In fact, the Ferrari has already moved on to a new home and the M6 is set to hit the auction block in the very near future.

The Ferrari is owned in part by a relative of the person driving at the time. That relative will receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale, while the other owner receives 30 percent. The government is going to hold on to the rest. The owner of the M6 also receives 30 percent but the government keeps the other 70. The reason for the payouts? To clear notes on each car with the owners respective banks.

For putting peoples lives in danger like that? Sure.

not only should they steal, they should put those people in jail and revoke their licenses for a couple years.

Think about it, a car can be a deadly weapon just like a gun. In the hands of a responsible person even the fastest most powerful cars are safe, just like the most powerful guns can be safe. But when you abuse that privilege then it should be taken away.

You wouldnt want someone shooting a gun off in public right? Even if they have a class 3 weapons license. So, the same goes with idiots going 130 mph in a 35 mph almost killing someones family.

So because they almost killed someone, the govnt has a right to steal??

I'm 100% sure that you always drive the posted speed limit whenever you drive on public roads, correct?
Never breaking the law, and never accelerating in an unsafe manner in the n54 of yours?

I'm sure of it too. But to think that its acceptable for anyone to steal cause a law is broken is quite absurd.

That's like saying you are in a fight, and inadvertantly kill someone.. do they steal your hands??

What don't you understand about DBFIU's post?
It's like saying you are in a fight, pull out an uzi and 'inadvertently' kill someone. Then the gov't 'steals' your freedom.
it's reckless and there are consequences.

Nah, they shouldn't be justified in stealing.

Putting people at risk is always wrong, but they didn't kill or hurt anyone. They are making an example out of them and people are letting their government get away with it.

We should not be applauding the government deciding what to do with your possessions to teach you a lesson about what "could" happen.

Ok so if i go shooting my gun off in public and dont kill anyone should the government let me keep my guns?

Also, I never denied speeding. But I dont do 130 in a 35 near pedestrians. That deserves some jail time and cars confiscated, because at that point you are putting pedestrians lives at risk the same way you would touting a firearm. Thats just how I see it.

I think the penalty should be different if you intentionally go off in public to use your guns to kill others.

How do we know this isn't exaggerated or what the distance even was?

I do not see it that way but no big deal. I don't believe the firearm example is relevant as touting one doesn't put people at risk, it needs to be loaded and it needs to be aimed or at least fired in the direction of people. I see what you are saying about risk but I don't think the analogy holds up. Speeding isn't the same thing as recklessly brandishing a loaded firearm and it certainly isn't justification for the government taking away your property.

Ok then what should they do? Just give them a fine, they will pay it; and two weeks later go and do the same thing. People like that need to learn a lesson, the hard way. Im not for government control either trust me, but in this case it really hits my nerve. Because I love cars and I hate to see $#@!bags like this put lives at risk and those cars reputation at risk as well. They should be given priuses to drive for the next 3 years as punishment.

P.S. I have sped on roads before, everyone has. But not to this extent, 130 in a 35 near people. No way have I ever come close putting people at risk like that.

i'm the guy who still has the 278Km/h ticket but that was in Highway,
driving with 200km/h and putting two kids life in danger is not acceptable.

Yep, and that same thinking will be that they can just go buy another Ferrari anyway so what have they learned?

I'm not excusing driving fast in a zone that may or may not contain pedestrians. I'm saying we should not condone government seizing your property when they feel like it. It just reinforces that government can do whatever it wants.

What should they do? Well, you up the punishment if there were serious consequences. If there weren't, you don't do something special just because they are rich and this will get attention.

I'm sure they got their lawyers involved and still lost. It is a shame that things can be taken away just to make an example.

I almost had my other 335 taken away for 'racing' it's a messed up story. I can get the whole story from another forum if you want to know all the details. I wasn't going that fast though.

That's exactly what I don't like. I don't like them having that kind of power and that some dick cop can write you up for it even if you may be getting on the gas to pass someone.

    last week, I'm following a friend's G35 after dinner.
we were moving quick, but nothing crazy until
he floors it and flies ahead.
my car is too new to be driving crazy so i didn't ( it wasn't broken in yet )
    i stayed behind.
he put the lights on me right after tailgating so close iI thought he was going to hit me.
he then goes in front of my car to stop my friend who was ahead.
in trying to get both of us, he lost my friend and only got me.

the cop grabs my keys and license and chases after the other car,
    which is gone.

    he comes back and says,
" if you don't call your friend and get him back here, I'm taking your car''.
i said, I don't know the other person.

after an hour of writing he comes back and asks me,
    "So, who's picking you up?"
i said, 'nobody, you can't take my car'
    he says, ''oh yea??''
    " here's your license,
    your registration
    your insurance,
    here are your tickets..
he turns away, takes couple steps and says,
    'And here's your key'
as he threw it at me.
my key hit me in the face and landed under the passenger seat.

i was totally compliant and polite.
i just wasn't going to get involved with another driver and a cop.
so he took his anger out on me because he had to have been PISSED
at something else to write me SEVEN BS tickets.
they are all for circumstacial things that i didnt even do.
(except the one for registration not affixed to windshield, within 2wks)
and he had to go back to his map every time to put a location for each one.
they are the biggest bs ever.
and after an hour of being hot headed, angry and chasing people, he'd have to be ROBOCOP to remember each infraction and the location for each. liar
He just wanted to use me to get the other person who he lost in the 1st place.
he must've thought I'd call the guy crying, please dont let them take my new bmw.
if he wrote a reasonable amount of tickets, he'd have a reasonable amount of paperwork
so he made it that much worse for him and better for me,
but still sucks for me, since I had to pay a lawyer.
he says the cop will never show up and all the tickets will be dismissed but we'll see

update all dickets reduced to an 'unsafe door opening' fine and with the lawyer fees ( he's a shark ) and the fine it came to about $1,400.

He said he could have taken both our cars for 'racing' so goof thing I didn't rat out on my friend.

All Cops want is for you to incriminate yourself. I don't understand what is wrong with them, aren't they human beings? Why the $#@! do they want to destroy so many innocent people's lives? They should get out there and get the real bad guys.

Ouch. Glad you got it reduced (wtf is unsafe door opening btw lol) and I'm sure it will end up cheaper than the insurance hike could have been. I personally despise traffic cops and thoroughly enjoy the various 'never talk to the police' videos on youtube. It really never, ever helps you out unless the cop is planning on letting everything go. One of the more interesting points I picked up was from a law professor talking about your Miranda 'warning'. Although everything you say can/will be held against you, nothing you say to the police can be used for you. Apparently it falls under hearsay.
