    Which car to get?

Hey guys, I've been looking at 3 different car choices:

    1. E36 M3 Sedan.

    2. B5 S4.

    3. TT 1.8T Quattro

I know the TT may look out of place here, but there is a nice one at a dealer close to my house that I have been looking at that is already nicely modded. I've already gone to look at an Alpine white/black E36 sedan (definitely rare), but it was pretty rough and had been dropped way too far. Thoughts on which one I should go with (including maintenance/insurance costs)?

That is tough one... I would throw the TT right out.

For me it boils down to the E36 and the B5 S4. Do you plan to mod?

While I love my 1er, I don't consider myself a "BMW fanboy," by any means... That said, I've owned a TT and it was a piece of crap. It *DID* get a ton of attention, but totally lacked performance. The S4s are fun to tinker with, but the best explanation I ever heard for one was, "If you own that car, have $10k sitting in an account someplace and be willing to dump it in to the drivetrain at a moment's notice." And while this may be a bit extreme, it's not far off. They do have a ton of mod potential though.

That said, buy the light, nimble car and incredibly fun car... Then, when you're ready for more, add forced induction. E36 M3 gets my vote. Click here to enlarge

If you are going to mod I'd say B5 S4 if you're gonna keep it fairly stock or lightly mod E36 M3.

Thanks for the insights. I do plan to mod (I work in that field currently too), but since this will be my first car, I will probably stick to small visual mods for a while. It definitely looks like I should rule out the S4 after hearing about the $10k rule though!

Well.. you are buying used so you can check to see what the owner has done. I would not necessarily rule it out.

I would get the B5 S4 for minor mods. Major mods, the E36 M3. The M3 is more to drive as well.

depends on how fast you wanna go....

If i wanted an absurd amount of horsepower I would go for the B5 S4 without question

Hands down the e36 from what you are telling us. Easiest to maintain, reliable, very fun, has a very direct and nimble feel to it and can be modded to any degree you wish as well.

The only thing the S4 is good for is your willing to do a good amount of work to it, revamp it and make it fast.

You will have to build both motors and in that case the E36 will be providing the absurd horsepower... just look at Maximum PSI's stuff, they are running 9's.

Well, given the fact that if you find one of these cars, they are going to have high mileage on them most likely. So a rebuilt motor is pretty much a must before doing any type of forced induction. Didnt really think about that. Either way you cant go wrong! Always was a sucker for the styling of an E36 M3 :romance-lovegoddes:

E36 M3 all the way man!

Lightweight, lots of mod options, and that look.... You cant beat the beauty of that design.

M3 - MUCH better handling than the S4. TT is simply slow and gay.
