Drag race between the new BMW i8 hybrid and the Porsche 991 Carrera S PDK with the optional X51 powerkit

Interesting matchup here of new-school hybrid sports car technology against the more traditional sports car without electronic assistance. The BMW i8 is not a slouch despite its 1.5 liter three-cylinder turbo motor. The i8 manages an impressive 0-60 in 3.8 seconds. It also gets through the 1/4 mile in 12.3 seconds at 114 miles per hour. Solid performance for the 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque hybrid car.

Is that enough to out drag a Porsche 991 Carrera S though? The Carrera S gets its power from a 400 horsepower 3.8 liter flat-6 engine. That is the standard Carrera S but this 991 Carrera S is equipped with the $17,800 X51 Powerkit which adds 30 horsepower courtesy of new cams, cylinder heads, and a new tune.

On paper the Carrera S should have the advantage considering it has more power and its 3332 pound curb weight is just slightly lighter than the 3380 of the i8. The main area of advantage the i8 has is that the electric torque comes on instantly off the line and with its all wheel drive that should on paper allow the i8 to get a lead from a stop courtesy of the 100 lb-ft torque advantage. The Carrera S should then catch and pass it.

How does it play out in practice? It's an easy beatdown. Considering the standard 991 Carrera S is already quicker and faster than the i8 the Powerkit just makes the gap larger. The i8 is an awesome technological achievement but it is not a replacement for the Porsche 911 or the traditional sports car. At least not yet.
