BMW F80 M3 F82 M4 S55 inline-6 ECU (engine control unit) already cracked and flashable?

This information comes to BimmerBoost courtesy of one of our tuning vendors. Based on a discussion with the tuner they have stated they have the ability to flash the S55 DME. As you may know, tuning modern turbocharged BMW's through the factory engine computer is proving difficult as BMW has tremendously upped encryption of the engine computers and is cracking down on any internal sources leaking codes to tuners to flash the ECU.

Even vaunted BMW tuners with deep pockets such as Dinan are forced to resort to piggyback tuning due to the difficulty of gaining access to the modern BMW ECU's. Tuners with some of the best software engineers in the business such as COBB Tuning have stated that the encryption level of the F30 3-Series ECU is government security caliber. COBB has been working for some time now to try to get access to the F30 ECU and there is no telling if they will be able to.

That is why this piece of news comes with some reservations as the tuner did not state how they were able to get access the S55 ECU in the F80 M3 and F82 M4. It certainly would be astounding for a crack to come this quickly as the car just hit the market. BimmerBoost is waiting on further details as the tuner makes preparations to make this software available. As soon as we get the concrete proof rest assured BimmerBoost will bring it to you ASAP.

I'm not saying who it is until I have proof but no, not them.

I can honestly say I wasn't really that excited about the upcoming M3/M4 platform, but after seeing Terry's tuning results and everything else moving along so quickly.. I'm definitely interested!

    Yeah it is Gintani.

Josh aka Tightie has already hinted that he was running a beta tune. I am guessing that it is his Yas Marina blue M3 in that pic too.

Funny you mentioned this, I actually texted him today to ask him if he was tuned. I'm going to stay out of this one, not my part to speak.

The pic is just a random pic of the engine bay.

I really hope Cobb comes through with this. I dont see why not since they are already working on a new bread of ROM INA0S that was just recently released this year for the N54 335is http://www.bimmerboost.com/showthrea...013#post560013

The INA0S ROM is very close or is the same bread of ROM used in the new M3/M4 platform, not sure, just rumor.

If its Gintani, then your going to pay out the azz for their tuning especially if they dont have any competition other than BMS. However, IMO, a piggback solution will have its cons, and limits when it comes to the DCT transmission. In this case Gintani will have a major advantage.

If Cobb breaks through then it will keep Gintani from price gouging

There is nothing really to stay out of. He already mentioned on the other forum, they had to load the stock tune back on to get a before/after dyno for the downpipes. And he has said something was in the works in various threads. Not hard to put two and two together.

Good stuff ! I think a lot is going to be unlocked since GAD motors unlocked the CLA45 ecu which was thought to be impossible same ecu and encryption as used in the new BMW's and McLaren. They probably found a way through it and its starting to spread out now

Lets be honest guys, people are probably just buying the encryption key from someone in Germany.
@BuraQ, the ROM is really the easy part of figuring out how to flash the car. The ROM is just the data that you are manipulating. The hard part about flashing is figured out HOW to get the DME to accept the modified data...

From what I see gintani prices their stuff very competitively. For what you get vs the price its far more affordable than Dinan and some other companies who really over price their stuff. This is great new regardless though.

The real question will be if you can tune it yourself (or pay a typical 3rd party tuner) or if they lock it down with the master-slave Guy Freiling cables and require all tuning to go through them. This is what has held back the S65 market for years.

This is why I wanted a Cobb unit for the S65; I'm tired of the bull$#@! shadow-tuner culture in the S65/S85 world.

Hopefully this works out and the tuning community can start to develop some tunes for the motor!

solid investment, looking foward to your findings even though i do not find it sensible to buy a brand new M3/4 and rip the brand new car apart to go fast... but many will i bet, and its people buying M's not non m cars so the $$ to mod is likely there with a more mature crowd... Cant wait to see what happens Click here to enlarge

I've never attempted to, but was under the impression that the bimmerboost flash was capable of reading out the S65 DME and flashing it. Someone would just need to devote the time to reading the ROM and editing it and you are good to.
