BMW plans to add a front wheel drive 1-Series sedan to the lineup

Someone please make it stop. The new F20 1-Series that is not available in the USA is getting great reviews overseas. Namely the N55 inline-6 turbocharged F20 M135i model which the F22 M235i that is available in the USA is basically the same thing but in coupe instead of hatchback form. Both the M135i and M235i share the same architecture and are rear wheel drive. The kink in all of this is the 2-Series Active Tourer which is a front wheel drive platform.

Now, a 1-Series sedan makes sense if you follow the new BMW naming rule that has sedans as odd numbers and coupes as even numbers. If this is the case why the four-door 2-Series Active Tourer has a '2' instead of a '1' is anyone's guess. What BMW wants to do now is take the front wheel drive 2-Series Active Tourer platform (which is just a rebadged Mini platform anyway) and use it to create a 1-Series sedan.

Why? Who the hell knows why. Probably because someone at BMW was bored and decided this was a cheap way to create a new sedan and inflate sales. The platform is there, change it to a four-door sedan, put a 1 on it, boom, you're done. Why not use the more agile, better balanced, and traditional rear wheel drive BMW platform that is already available as an F20 1-Series or F22 2-Series? Once again, who knows why BMW is not doing this.

Stretching the 1 or 2 to add four doors makes more sense in BimmerBoost's opinion as a front wheel drive BMW sedan just feels wrong. It just feels unnatural. But BimmerBoost is not in charge of BMW and the NES (New Entry-Level Sedan) will apparently further boost BMW's sales numbers as that is all that BMW cares about.

A BMW source told Autonews.com, "The NES is integral to our growth plans. It will be an important pillar in the future 1-series lineup, particularly in the U.S. and China, where sales of small premium-brand four-door sedans are on the rise."

Get ready for more front wheel drive BMW's that are just rebadged Mini's.

I keep holding on to the hope that, for BMW to produce light weight/fast M cars, they need more income....so they need to boost sales. BMW is not GM, ford, or vw group, they don't sell as much as these big companies so for them to invest in better technology, they need to boost sales/profits.

The way they boost profits is by selling more cars. Sharing platforms is more profitable.

    Sounds good....time will tell.

They need more income. Sure, God needs more money too. I mean, global warming and all costs money to fix right?

You're on crack man. They made better cars when they had lower sales figures. How?

They made better cars when the competition was less. Look at the new vette, new mustang, AMG models, Audi RS models, caddilac v cars, Lexus IF. Less than half these cars existed 10 years ago. Everyone is going after the 3 series and m cars.

BMW is trying to stay a head of the competition with light weight materials and powerful/fuel efficient motors. People all complain about the f series m not being light enough, but that costs money. They could have made it lighter, but the base price would prob be 90k instead of 60k lol

They made better cars when they weren't chasing sales above all else. Seriously, we're talking front wheel drive BMW's. FRONT WHEEL DRIVE BMW's. Have we lost our minds?

Or... just follow me here. They could have not let the 3-Series get so bloated on purpose to squeeze in cheap front wheel drives underneath it on the Mini platform to inflate sales and profit margins.

No doubt your points are valid. In the end we'll never know. But yea, a front wheel drive BMW is laughable. If they keep making good m cars, I don't care.

I'd have to say the current 3 series is the best they've ever produced. The n54 and n55 are gems.....

I love everything BMW has been doing, but im just not a fan of what they've been doing to the 1-series. The 1 series is supposed to be a small two door coupe that's quick and handles well. I just don't like them turning it into a hatchback and then into a 4-dour...I think that just defeats the purpose of the 1 series. BMW already has plenty 4 door vehicles. And why FWD?

Pretty obvious. BMW CEO was recently all over the news about how much they want to increase their profit margin. This is definitely a step in that direction. What we don't know yet is how deep this FWD blasphemy will go. If they are merely supplementing their current lineup, and using the badge to its fullest extent, or if they will ultimately replace their core products with...cheaper ones. Who knows?

It has been known this was coming. In the future anything under the 3-series will be built on the new FWD share platform (including Minis). Everything 3-series and up will be built on a RWD shared platform.

BMW is moving towards major cost savings.

If they were building this crap to deliver an M mid-engine sports car, Z4M, or other cool stuff I'd say go for it. They are doing this just to increase profit margins without delivering enthusiast vehicles. It's blasphemy. It should be illegal.

BMW saying they want to basically build your car cheaper so they make more money is definitely not something a customer wants to hear. I've been loving all that theyre doing with the 2 and 4 series, don't start to take steps backwards!
