yes i know, exactly my point. Never once did i hear a ptf or bms motor blowing shortly after trying a map... ask Dan (ak335i) his friend was one of the first... there was one last week i heard of and two in between there that I have heard of and I am some random person in NY

part of the problem may be users having piggybacks being told to put this is user adjustment xyz etc, not remembering what they did... terry didnt let meth safety be changed for very very long, now you can set custom boost targets on fuel and turn off flow detection...

similar things that people MAY do when they want the "fastest stock turbo" map, etc.... so who knows but wedge leads all on blown motors, ask around

Here is a prime example, and it happened last night while doing some boost, EGT, and BP logging on the shop car. Running the mega aggressive 558WHP/619WTQ tune, WITH a few extra PSI added for good measure I am doing a 2000-redline pulls in 3rd. Mid-pull 29+ psi, 15 degrees of advance, 5500RPM meat of the powerband, number 2 injector plug somehow vibrates out, dropping all fuel to number 2 cylinder instantly, log is a scary thing to behold, bank 1 afr jumping to over 15:1 and HPFP dropping all at the same time. SOMEHOW the DME being the magic box it is, catches it and throws it into limp, I pull over check codes, #2 injector malfunction, hmmm. Pop the hood find the plug out just quite not seated and am 100% sure when I fire it back up the idle is going to be lumpy still with a torched cylinder. Fire it back up, dead smooth do 3 more pulls at these levels, logs are all perfect. In ANY PI car that cylinder is gone if something like that happens.

The point of this story is, if the DME can work its magic to protect the motor in a situation like that, you must really be doing bad things to lose one of these, from a lean / knock condition.
this is impressive on many different levels...

I tried Wedge's flash and I had nothing but issues. First, it would limp with a transmission error on normal cruise and the car would come to a stop with the RPM's launching up and down and the car would be lunging forward. He sent me three revisions and the problem kept occurring. On the 4th revision I would hit limp mode going WOT and sending the jb4 into map 4. When I sent him the codes he said it was a hardware error. I loaded up the BMS map which I ran for over a year with NO PROBLEMS and everything went back to normal, no limping, no map 4, no weird rpm jumping and no transmission error. How can it be a hardware error if the BMS map fixed everything. I'm now running Justin's map and it works flawlessly. I had really clean logs with Wedges flash but the errors, limp modes, and poor diagnosis leaves me wondering if this guy really knows what hes doing. No offense to him.

this is the exact same revisions he sends everyone... I inquired to see and filled with very aggressive fuel and 100 percent meth to test and my car flat lines horribly, was curious what he would do next, he sent three files lol all of which causes SEVERE drivability issues some leaving the car un able to accelerate. And now this proves my point, its the SAME EXACT thing he sent you knowing the possibilities. I rest my case for real now.

I have to make a few corrections, I just went back and looked more closely at the logs, its was even worse than I thought and the DME still saved it. So it was at 5350 not 5500, boost had tapered from 29 psi to around 25.5, but the AP log is what is scary, Pedal still to the floor, almost 26 psi, 15.4 degrees of advance, HPFP falls on its face to from 2800 to 1600PSI in 64 RPM, and lambda goes from 12.5 to 15.5 to 23.96 in the same RPM window, you can see the misfire in the RPM line on the AEM. How that wizard of a box saved it is beyond me. Also as far as running high boost, you can crank just about any stock frame up in the midrange, its up top where it gets hard to hold it and starts to tear things up with the BP, etc. This tune on the dyno was running like 27 tapering to 17 when it made the 558/619 its making 28.5 - 29psi tapering to about 19psi right now on the street, and the logs are still super clean, none to minimal corrections from pull to pull. E85 is the juice of the gods.

I think he gave up on this forum. I only see his post on n54tech. He starts to charge for his "protune" time now. I really want to see anyone who has his flash to break some record.

His account was set to a guest vendor due to him sending links to products through PM's and also due to posting links on the forum. The 'donation' stuff isn't flying any longer.

You need a Bavarian Technic Cable to do the logging. When you are in the App - Engine > Actual Values. From here you can select the options you want to have logged.

I would say most of the people looking to obtain a wedge flash don’t have a JB4 and just using BB flash for a tune. I have a 335i and 535i that are only relying this way for a flash. Ken (Wedge) does not specify exactly how much he wants for donation. From nothing to $20 to $150 I am sure it’s all over the place. As for Terry actually tuning peoples cars for free, I was assume this are his own customers that have already bought his product and if it’s just for a user wanting to use BB flash and nothing else that’s very generous of him

    .

I think it’s safe to say that every turner starts with a basic map for the mods given and then grabs a log and goes from there. Ken is no different in this regards, his tunes from what I can see and experience just are very aggressive.

But i have heard many stories like Tony's ..... helping remotely many times but the stories I have heard than have him send these same files to people he knows are running pump gas who do not know much of anything about the key factors in engine health while running aggressively , which can easily be told by a few emails back and forth by him and the user. It is what it is, im done, i shared my .02 but I would 100000% stick with PTF or Terry over him personally.
I have heard from this time to time about blown motors but have yet to see any evidence of people running his tune and this has happened. Nothing saying it has not happened but still. I know @Rob1976 has been running his tune for some time now with extensive logging and is very happy with it.

I had no intention of starting a “Wedge is a crappy turner” thread and have people come out of the woodwork from random stories they have had with no real hand experience with. Not saying that’s the case with everybody. Rather gain some knowledge of logging / tuning and making my car as fast and reliable as possible. Personally I have dealt with Ken in the past on the 535xi. He spent hour’s settings up the computer, coding, explaining different tuning approaches ect and he was given a donation. After all was said and done he made it very clear that he would do as many revisions that it took to make the car exactly as I wanted it. This is the same reason why I went to him again for the 335i, it just so happens that the logs were not that great. I have added around 4 gallons of e85 so that brought me to a e30 mix that should help with the oct rating. If wedge can’t come through with a solid safe reliable tune I will take my money else ware, at the moment I have not sent a donation for this exact tune cause I know it’s just a off the shelf map and he wanted me to log and correct until the car was happy and after working with him depending on the time spent provide a donation as seen fit.

With that being said I will see how this goes, just getting the car ready for BimmerFest East. Rob just sent me a replacement turbo center section to correct the smoking issue I have been having ((Unrelated to Wedges tune)) so I will be doing that this weekend. This is just a Temp hold until the winter to see if I want to build or buy a ST kit.

On a side note, anybody know were the best place online besides the obvious (tirerack) to buy some R-S3?

I have heard mixed reviews about the R888 for track and rain. Plus I already have the r-s3 fronts that tirerack had a closeout on cause of V1 so I could not pass them up and this is for the 535xi mostly daily anyway. I will give that site a try.

I'll always help people as much as I can on the JB4 end. But I'm only one guy... and due to constraints on my time running the business and doing development it's not really possible for me to help everyone anymore. So I've trained Jon @ BMS & Russell @ BMS on common tuning problems and giving tuning advice where appropriate. If they get something really tricky then they kick it up to me.

In extreme cases I'll suggest people hire a local custom tuner if they are looking to do something unique and need more help than we can provide. The JB4 is just another tuning tool and like any tool you can apply it in different ways. It's a shame PTF has no interest in learning how to tune with a JB4 in the mix as its a very powerful and flexible tool especially now that it has timing monitoring on all six cylinders. But Wedge and some other tuners out there are available for those who need that special attention.

IMHO regardless of the tuner following a couple basic rules would save a lot of these strung out motors: 1) Don't disable misfire detection and 2) Always follow MBT practices.

If I charged for every flash I've helped with this summer... so far I've denied every penny (but have taken food/beer/cookies from locals). I would just feel bad charging to fix something charged for.

Alright so a quick update. Ken never got back to me in regards to the log file that I sent. I received a Auto-Reply saying that he was busy from all the emails ect ect so not sure if he is around or not.

I don't plan on running this flash at all after everybody's suggestions and wondering if somebody with some good tuning knowledge would like to help me with make a safe fast tune for my car. I only have Bav Tech and BB flash but nice long flat roads in NH this weekend for good logging. If somebody is willing to assist just let me know, I would appreciate the help.

I contaced PTF and asked but they only work with Cobb. I did not know Terry helped with BB flash and was not planning on going to shiv haha. I also know there are very knowledgeable people on here that know how to tune also. I always figured with BB flash u were kinda on your own or got the help of other members for tuning that's why I never really went to a turner. I could contact Terry's team and see if they could help but figured I would try here and maybe learn in the process.

Unfortunately, logging with the BT cable pretty much sucks when it comes to fine tuning. Give the ATR thread a good read and download the "Help" file from Cobb's site to get started. Getting a tune that runs decent isn't hard but getting one that runs and logs beautifully is.

You could always pick up a used AP for cheap and go that route.

I always figured with BB flash u were kinda on your own or got the help of other members for tuning that's why I never really went to a turner. I could contact Terry's team and see if they could help but figured I would try here and maybe learn in the process.
Use an off the shelf pump gas standalone tune. Do something conservative.
Log what you're logging now. Look for timing drop-outs. If timing drop out coincides with increase of IAT, adjust the IAT compensation tables in those cells to more aggressively cut timing with IAT increase.

On a fresh pull if you get timing drops then reduce timing table until you're straight.

Do not increase over the baseline map, you are not experienced enough not to blow up your motor.

When you are ready to spend money and make power safely get a piggy and cobb combo and an on-dyno protune.
