Thumbs down How *NOT* to change your transmission fluid...

On the 4th my family and I were heading down the interstate when a vehicle in front of us dropped a load of wood on the road. I had no where to go but over a 4x6 that was flipping down the road. Amazingly, it went under my front fascia, but then there was a loud "thunk". We were already getting off on the next exit and as we exited Idrive popped up a transmission malfunction and the car just rev'd in gear. I called BMW roadside assistance and had it towed to the dealer. $1,000 later and I've got a new transmission pan and under body panels.

    Two things:

    1. We're very fortunate there was no more damage and no one was hurt. It could have easily come through the windshield or I could have stopped but would have likely been rear-ended at 70mph, etc. So all in all, we were very lucky.

    2. I'm amazed that all it had was a little tear. These cars are built like tanks. Kudos to BMW.

One question - as we coasted to a stop, I was spraying transmission fluid out the rear and it coated the back of my car and then sat on it for several days waiting for parts. Does anyone know if transmission fluid is corrosive? It doesn't appear to have damaged the paint, but perhaps it will have a longer term effect. The dealer wasn't sure if it would cause any long term damage.

I wouldn't think it would be particularly corrosive but that's pure speculation.

Glad no one was hurt. It's crazy what falls off people trucks sometimes. Ridiculous!

Free corrosion reducer. Free chassis lubrication. Call it what you want, just have it cleaned up and ignore the rest. It isn't going to hurt anything.

People who drive with unsecured loads are $#@!s.
I've had a hammer fall of the back of a ute in front of me, bounce and smash one of my headlights.
But like you said lucky it didn't come through the windscreen.

I totally agree. And the guy *had* to have known - so much fell off there is no way he didn't. But instead of stopping, he kept right on going.

On a separate note - especially to @alex@ABRhouston - is it possible that transmission fluid could have sprayed on the rear brake pads/rotors? I know there is some sort of heat shield in there, but thought I'd ask.
