BMW's N55 3.0 liter turbo inline-6 takes back the best 2.5-3.0 liter engine category with an award at the 2014 International Engine of the Year competition

The N55 is back as the best 2.5 - 3.0 liter engine in the world at the International Engine of the Year awards. For 2014, the N55 motor wins the category but the choice makes BimmerBoost wonder a bit about the logic. Last year, Porsche's 2.7 liter direct injected naturally aspirated flat-6 took the victory in this category knocking out the N55. Why did the reverse happen this year? What exactly changed? The judges?

Additionally, BMW's brand new S55 3.0 liter turbocharged six-cylinder that is a newer and better designed motor than the N55 finishes behind the Porsche 2.7 liter flat-6 and the N55 as well. The older N55 is better than the brand new S55 motor in the M3/M4 with greater torque, greater power, better engine components, higher revs, and an overall superior design? That just does not make much sense.

The N55 takes the victory according to the scoring of the judging panel but the decision certainly does not appear logical. Regardless, BMW dominates this category with four motors in the top six. If BimmerBoost were to guess, the S55 will take this category next year but that only further supports what an odd decision the N55 is for 2014.

Probably but they don't mention it. They do mention the N55 torque but the S55 has more. Additionally, the C02 output from the motors is about the same.

Not a logical decision in my opinion.

Engine of the year but still plagued with HPFP failures and a defective VANOs bolt design that's being recalled with no available parts.
It's a great engine otherwise if you ignore those 2 issues.

You would be surprised how much politics get involved with this. Someone got paid good money, someone's agenda got pushed up the latter, that is how this works. N55 is a great engine, but why Porsche won last year but this year BMW, it all comes down to how much money each brand spent on lobbing.

yeah slightly confusing with the VANOS bolt recall?

i don't see HPFP failures being a thing any more, especially with the new design?

HPFP issues are a thing of the past. No one has issues anymore after BMW made some changes. The software change they made that primes the pump when you unlock the car (you can hear it) and the new design is a win.

By the way, my wife's n20 in her x3 also primes the pump when you unlock the car, you can hear it.

HPFP or not, defend the logic in the choice. N55 over S55? After the N55 already lost? I would bet money the S55 takes this category next year making this all look idiotic.
