Pretty good review, I'd still think the //M cars are the benchmark and not the RS, but that's just my opinion.

the M cars have always been the benchmark, this guy got it wrong. this proves the m4 is just all about power, squirrelly car too. this guy was havin trouble controlling it and still got 3 secs faster than the Audi, thats amazing

Watch the 2015 BMW F82 M4 smack the B8 Audi RS5 around on the roadcourse and laugh at Quattro

As an automotive enthusiast who participated in a few different discussion forums over the years experience has shown that putting performance in context with Audi fans is frustrating. Why? Well, let's take this example of the Audi RS5. It's an absolutely beautiful car with a gem of a 4.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 motor revving to 8500 rpm and sending 450 horsepower to all four wheels. Your average car fan will see the 450 horsepower figure and think it beats the BMW M4 with 'only' a 425 horsepower rating.

It is easier to achieve peace in the Middle East than it is to get a casual Audi fan to understand that the horsepower ratings of both of these cars could not be more misleading. This is one of those times where traditional BMW strengths are exemplified. What are those strengths? Balance, less weight on the nose, and a more efficient drivetrain sending its power to the rear wheels.

Because BMW does not need Quattro crutches BMW's claimed 425 horsepower actually comes out to 427 horsepower at the rear wheels. Yes, the M4 is heavily underrated but it also benefits from not having to send power to all four wheels and saves weight by not having an all wheel drive system. The RS5 has roughly 350 wheel horsepower depending on the dyno used. Audi's higher crank horsepower rating means absolutely nothing in the real world and this is why Autocar stating that the RS5 has more power is wrong. It has less power. A lot less power (and torque). These people at Autocar get paid for these incorrect statements?

Power is only one part of the equation. The traction (not handling or grip in corners) advantage is with the Audi. However, once moving at speed the extra weight on the nose from the all wheel drive system is not exactly a benefit on the track. Understeer? That is the Audi trademark over the years and it is present on the RS5. It definitely can not adjust its rear with the throttle to the degree the BMW can. This is all reflected in its laptime of 1:12.20.

The M4 is said to be more fun to drive and it is. It takes more skill to extract its performance but it is more entertaining. It is the driver's car and this is the area BMW has traditionally always beat Audi although Audi has improved tremendously. Sure, your Quattro will save you during a blizzard but nobody goes on the racetrack during a blizzard. In the dry as in this comparison where maximum performance can be extracted the M4 crushes the RS5 with a 1:09.90 laptime.

2.3 seconds may not sound huge but on a track this short that is a lifetime. The M4 is simply lighter, faster, more powerful, and the higher performance car. The traditional BMW aspects trump Audi's traditional aspects in the performance area as they have for long time when the M3/M4 and RS4/RS5 are concerned. Sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Audi fans will be quick to point out the RS5 is in need of update. They are right. It is desperately in need of an update and a hell of an update at that or else this will continue to be embarrassingly one sided as it has been for generations now. The benchmark is set. The benchmark is the M4.

Has that S85 sounding purr to it at full tilt. I like it.

But I also caught the statement of 'induced cabin noise.' Is BMW piping the engine noise through the stereo again??

What kills the Audi, besides the fact that it's using a 7 year old engine, is the fact that it weighs almost 500 lbs. more than the M4. That weight isn't all from the transfer case and front diff, Quattro is a fairly compact system. That car needs to go on a diet before it develops diabetes.

Yea IIRC active sound is spreading like cancer across the lineup. In due time i'm sure it'll be in all BMWs with some type of sporting pretension.

they need to put the motor behind the front wheels..not ahead of it.

RS5 is a fat, heavy pig. Beautiful to look at, fun to sit in and rev the engine, but that's about all it's good for. And it's more expensive. And has a fair inferior...everything. M4 is just a great car all around, after that dyno we saw the other day it just became even more appealing.

The RS5 is outclassed as a performance car there is no doubt about it. It's still a great car. It just is an Audi vs. an M car. It's why I have always chosen an M car over the Audi.

That doesn't so much work with their AWD system design, unfortunately.

The only good driver's cars from Audi have been the B7 RS4(The original home of that V8), and the R8's...is that fair to say? I'm more interested in the competition from the C63 replacement(coupe AND sedan!)

    @Sticky and everyone else,
Has anyone test driven an M3/4 yet? I saw a truckload on it's way to dealer prep over here in Fairfield, CT and the dealership told me they should have them on the showroom Saturday the latest if I want a test drive!

Thought you might have gotten the offer since i've seen some on west coast showrooms already. It's obvious a s65tt > s55 so I never thought you'd switch platforms, lol!

I could go down to Shelly BMW and tell them I'm interested but I'd be lying. I'm done with BMW.

That would be under the guise of media not as a potential buyer. I seriously doubt if cameras are on they will let me take the car out.

If I were to show up and say I want one that's different. I've only bought my last how many BMW's from them?

Two things from me - one, the amount of body roll in the M4 is near-zero... Impressive - very impressive. It's one of the flattest cars I have seen this side of a 911 with PASM. They did a good job with the chassis, that's for sure.

The second is that the M3 seems to always have that dual-personality of being both very fast around a track and also very easy to control its angle with the throttle around a corner. It's not coincidence that these things go together - that's what makes a car "easy" to drive fast. Just like all M3s that I have driven - it's very easy to keep on the limit of adhesion.

Good job BMW (minus the turbos) <g>.

They did a great job for what it is.

Is it a razor sharp M as in the past? No. Is it a great car? Certainly.
