Pointing out they do not have an expensive package for the 335i because the cost of entry is cheaper. That means the pricing is adjusted based on the cost of the car and inflated to coincide. The Dinan D-Tronics box for example does not appear to change at all hardware wise for any application but the pricing does simply by adjustment of the price point of the car. M5 tax, that is what you see from Dinan and what you see from Switzer there.

A couple people have contacted Cobb about N55 tuning. They came back and straight up said they will not be working on tuning for the F-series BMW's.

That's how tough these stupid things are getting to flash. It's not for lack of trying on Cobb's part.

I just cannot believe it can be this hard to crack...this is insane...can all of these guys just chip in and rent some time on a supercomputer? Clearly what they have is not working. This is unreal...everything in the world can be decrypted at some point...

These prices are insane, there is absolutely not one reason to buy this.

Well looks like I'll be touring the Dinan facilities next month so we'll get better answers to all these questions from Dinan himself. I just hope Dinan knows I'm not Gustav and I will be asking serious questions.

The wording is technically sound with 'designed and built to be the only tuning box on the market that is emissions legal in all 50 states' but the overall paragraph is not logically coherent and falls apart after that. It goes from implying design for 50 state legality to not legal in 50 states in a hurry. By default then it does not have a 50 state legal design.

It just doesn't make sense to me. How do you design something for 50 state legality but then you support the statement by stating it isn't?
It's manipulative marketing, otherwise known an 'shiv' marketing. I'm betting a similar system will be developed for the M3/M4, only with twin e-wastegate controls, and it'll be $4,000, because you know, M...

Not at all it just means I will ask questions we want to see asked. Being part of the automotive media doesn't mean shying away from asking tough ones. Well, if you actually are trying to provide quality information.

C'mon now. Just take a look at that piece and tell me it shouldn't cost a lot more than a JB4. Not knocking the JB as Terry offers an incredible value but Dinan has produced something that looks like an OEM component.

Certainly you can have more expensive components but isn't over $3k pushing it quite a bit?

When you visit Dinan you will see the scale of his business - no other BMW specialists come close. We all have our place in the market, but what he does has proven to be pretty successful to date. The BMW 'tuning' market is pretty damn big and there seems to be a large supply of folks into what Dinan is selling.

1024 bit RSA encryption is a real tough nut. Previous DME were only 256 bit encrypted.

Cobb has not quit trying to break the 1024 bit RSA encryption, but unless they do, there will be no more flashes.

Oh wow...1024 RSA? That's pretty rough. There's plenty of far more important things that aren't nearly as securely encrypted. No wonder it's taking this long. Just the amount of computing time and power alone you need to throw at this is immense I would think. If only we had quantum computers now. Screw diseases and optimization problems...we need them to crack BMW ECUs.

I've owned and still own a lot of Dinan products and the level of quality is ridiculous. I bought a JB4 once and well...Id bet the JB4 has a higher profit margin. I have friends that pay 5 to 6 figures for a watch that won't tell the time as accurate as a $#@!ing $10 satellite synced whatever the hell watch that exists. If you're really in to accurate time you'll clown the delta bravos paying that for an inaccurate watch. We're the minority that mod for balls out performance. $#@!, even smaller minority of people who actually log their engine performance and not stare at shadows. "My car pulls beast, sweet toooon!"

That's my pot stirring post for the night.

Looking forward to your impressions of the facility.

Dinan critics say it's overpriced based on performance. Where it lacks in performance it makes up in quality. You get what you pay for. As far as the piggy back, yes Mr. Dinan did say piggy backs under perform (or are inferior or whatever he said) but are there any other options for this platform in the near future? I sincerely don't know but will presume the answer is no. He might as well make the highest quality (read quality not performance) piggy back available.
