I think that is what you are missing. The decision is no longer Motorsport based, it is fuel economy and emissions based. Not to mention cost cutting is factored in.

Agreed... from original m3 e92 brochure.

"...v8 EnginE. The M3’s 4.0 litre V8 engine is inspired by motorsport technology – and it shows. The 420hp powerplant remains faithful to the BMW M tradition of high-revving, high-performance engines thanks to its lightweight components. Eight individually-adjustable throttle butterflies give the engine an immediate and direct throttle response at all times, resulting in an impressive maximum engine speed of 8,400rpm and a power output of 105hp/litre...."

Oh trust me I know the M tradition quite well. That is why seeing this... well, this new 'M' is not the lofty standard BMW once held themselves to.

Amen. I'm the biggest turbo fanatic breathing air I promise... but the S55 isn't worthy of the M3. it needs a high revving, rowdy NA motor. The S55 would have been great for the M2 or M235, but not the M3. I don't care. I like the N54 and N55 I'm not bashing, but that motor being slightly changed doesn't make it an M car, it makes it a glorified 335. If I wanted a 335 I'd buy one.
Looks like I'll say screw it and get another E92 M3.
Again I'm not bashing the N55/4 as I own a 1M, so obviously I like it. But the motor is far less spirited than a S54, S65, S62, S85....
    Because racecar.

Well maybe a few more topics, but I'm sure your head is big enough already so I dont want to help inflating it too much...

but on a more serious note, "M" should stand for motorsport, not as today when its means "Marketing"

So many comments in this thread I don't get.

Their cars will get lighter...they've investing heavily in CF but it takes time. By the time the next M3/4 are ready, I suspect that we will see heavy, heavy use in the chassis and several hundred pounds of weight loss just like as is expected with the next 5 and 7.

The days of the NA car are over...performance or otherwise. Unless you want to buy Ferraris and Lamborghinis, you won't have a choice. It's just the future. No point in whining about it.

I trust them to make a kick-ass turbo 4, and I think it's a little early to be losing sleep over a car that won't even exist for another half-decade in anything like a drivable form.

Yeah yeah yeah yeah. Forgot about that. And some 911 variants....for now. But even the Corvette will eventually have to change. I've never been a crazy sucker for the standard V8 sound myself, although I do like it.

I'd be willing to bet money that the Huracan successor will be FI...or at least heavily assisted by hybrid stuff.

Don't get me wrong...I love NA engines more than anything. But I gave up fighting against FI engines a while ago.

This video is amazing...I love the way this new V10 sounds.

Mazda is keeping the next gen miata na. Going to continue its tradition as a fantastic track car. Even lighter weight, with a na 2.0L with manual transmission (even a dual clutch option).
