BMW getting back to lightweight driver focused cars? 2017 BMW Z2 roadster coming

BMW is taking a lot of flack from enthusiasts lately and rightfully so. The Ultimate Driving Machine company is doing everything except for producing Ultimate Driving Machines. BMW seems preoccupied with electrics and front wheel drives completely forgetting its core principles of producing balanced cars that are fun to drive. With the M2 coming and the next generation 6-Series supposedly losing 500+ pounds maybe things are looking up with a lightweight and fun to drive Z2 roadster as a successor to the Z3?

You might think that until you realize the Z2 is just a reskinned front wheel drive Mini Roadster. Yes, the Z2 will be a front wheel drive. No, this is not a joke. Apparently one front wheel drive Mini with a BMW badge was not enough.

The Z4 is fairly heavy for a roadster due to its convertible hard top and it is not a lightweight sports car. The Z2 could be exactly that with its soft top but this will not be a roadster with the driving dynamics of the previous generation Z4 and Z3 models. BMW had the chance to produce a real Z3 successor and blew it with yet another slap to enthusiast's faces. If you want to preview what this car drives like, go take a Mini Cooper Roadster for a spin. There is your Z2.

The Z3 is coming back, so no more Z4. And the soft top will return, as this also save 300+ lbs. But the real news is the return of the M Roadster!!!!!!!!

Now the Z2, I knew would be FWD and could not drive such a car. And BMW should be ashamed to even develop a FWD roadster, but you don't have to buy one.

They should be ashamed but I suppose BMW no longer has to have pride.

    So. Done. With. BMW.

Is FWD cheaper to build? WTF is BMW thinking? It seems the accountants have taken over BMW.

Take the Mini Roadster, put a BMW badge on it, done. It's as cheap as it can be.

What it comes down to is platform sharing. BMW is taking a page out of Toyota and GM's book.

Future cars under the 3-series (and Minis) will be on their new FWD platform. 3-series on up will share a new platform called "35up" (including next gen 6 and 7 series).

This is not how BMW is supposed to be. Mini's should be Mini's and BMW's should not be rebadged Mini's.
