Axis of Oversteer put F80 M3 on the scales. http://blog.axisofoversteer.com/2014...ur-scales.html

So remember how the new 2015 F80 M3 was supposed to be much lighter than the E90 M3? It isn't. Curb weight measured at 3562 pounds

Oh BMW, you sure do know how to use marketing to stir interest don't you? BMW got the hype machine for the new F80 M3 rolling hard with a press release last year announcing a weight of 3306 pounds. They played up the idea that they went to crazy lengths to shave weight and that the new M3 would be much lighter than the car it replaced. That 3306 pound claimed weight was misleading to say the least as a 6-speed manual F80 M3 with fluids was weighed and it came out to 3562 pounds.

How exactly does BMW miss the target by 256 pounds? By quoting a dry weight without fluids and also likely with the optional carbon ceramic brakes which this F80 M3 does not have. This is a manual car by the way which means that a DCT M3 without the carbon ceramics will likely tip the scales at over 3600 pounds with a full gas tank.

How many pounds lighter is the new 6-speed F80 M3 than the E9X M3 it replaces in reality? Zero. It actually looks like it is about the same or heavier if equipped with the same transmission as the weight you see below is from a DCT E92 M3:

So much for BMW's weight loss hype. This does not mean the M3/M4 will not perform well or outperform the previous generation car. The M3/M4 will outperform the E9X M3 it just is a bit disappointing this car is not turning out to be quite what BMW portrayed it as initially.

"Axis of Oversteer also recently had a E90 M3 on the same scale and it weighed in a 3736 lbs (fully optioned, DCT, full tank, no driver) - 174 lbs heavier than the F80 M3 (3562 lbs). "

From that other forum's coverage of this same article. I've heard DCT vs manual is around 80-90lbs so the F80 is definitely lighter, but not by that much.

I saw that. They picked the heaviest E9X they could aside from an E93.

Due to the carbon roof it makes more sense to compare to an E92 with a carbon roof as well to minimize variables but you're going to see these cars vary depending on how they are optioned.

However you look at it are there lighter E92's? Yep. Is the F80/F82 as light as BMW claimed? Not even close.

i mean this is a perfectly fair comparison, both are 4 door m3s with (i would think since BMW is in love with cost-cutting) the same manual transmission. the advantages the f80 has is the CF roof and FI and then the carbon brakes if you wanna throw that in there. it would be just as fair if the f82 and e92 were being compared. but it is obvious that the e9x is the better engineered car.

It's fair sure. But it's also fair to bring up the E92 M3 with the carbon roof. It shows how much weight can change based on things like options alone.

I don't know if the E9X is better engineered yet. I have to wait and see. All I know is BMW essentially misled us about the weight savings.

My neighbor weighed his E90 M3 with 6 speed at the track last summer. Car was stock, a little over 3/4 tank, almost all options, and with cf roof. CAR WEIGHED 3689. Without driver. I don't see these cars being close in weight. No way.

Many have weighed their 6-speed E90 M3's in the mid 3,500 lbs.

Hate to say it but I told ya so ;-) I remember saying the us car without ceramic breaks would be in the 3500's and I was called crazy. Bad move by BMW over hyping the weight claim looks like the DCT car will be in the 3600 pound range still pretty good but not 3300

I just posted a car weighed that is lighter than what the F80 M3 was weighed at. So yes, they are pretty close.

The difference between the convertibles seems to be pretty close as well.

Options, fluids, etc., change it but the weight difference is not as large as BMW implied it would be.

If this thing actually weighed 3306 pounds there wouldn't even be a discussion.

It is a bad move to hype it the way they did. I don't know why. Generate buzz? I'd rather underpromise and overdeliver than overpromise and underdeliver.

    Exactly.

It varies from car to car and scale to scale too.

My own car was 3570 I believe. How much lighter is the F80 M3 than that?

How does your neighbor have an E90 with the carbon roof when... the e90 doesn't have the carbon roof? I understand you are cheerleading for the new cars and whatnot but you clearly pulled this out of nowhere.

Do you have a picture to show the car's weight and of its carbon roof? Because others have shown actual weights.

So you've never seen a car that doesn't come with a cf roof, end up with one? I guess things are different on the west cost.

This is a nice save after the fact.

So... pics of your buddies CF roofed E90 with its weight?

Regardless, the E90 didn't come standard with a CF roof.

Would be maybe good to compare an M4 to an E92 to see the most direct comparison since both have carbon roofs. This is disappointing for sure. Of course, all scales seem to vary wildly so who knows. I want to see the lightest possible M3/4 on the same scale as the lightest possible E90 and E92 M3s on the same day to see a fair comparison. I have to say I've rarely seen an E90 M3 quoted in the 35xx range, manual or not.

The lightest E92 M3 is always going to be lighter since that is the GTS. That said, standard trim the difference between the two seems to be a lot closer than it should.

Close to the point where how much fuel you have in the tank sways the results.

Yeah I meant standard M3 definitely not the GTS. But yeah I am pretty shocked by this...even dry weight I would think would not get you to 3306 from 356x. Ceramic brakes would help, might be worth 40-45 pounds. Still...seems too high. Fuel definitely skews the results.

The official BMW M4 weight of 1500kg or 3306lb is DIN. Which supposedly includes all fluids and 90% fuel. This just isn't panning out good for BMW. Yes the M3 is 50lbs heavier than the M4, but it still doesn't add up.

Oh and the DCT adds 89lb to the M3/M4. So M3's are definitely going to be in the 3600lb+ range with the most popular options.
