There's several videos of them going around a track...as per usual with any engine, especially modern engines that make so much power, it sounds much better under load. Certainly louder than the stock E46 M3. You can barely hear those. The E90 wasn't exactly a great sounding car with stock exhaust either. M cars have always had too-quiet exhaust compared to AMG. But that's fine, leaves room for the aftermarket. I personally like the way it sounds, and you can bet with the cats gone it will sound great just like the M5/6 do.

It sounds more or less like any turbo 6 with stock exhaust muffling. Quite an empty rasp, but that could be the camera. IDK what you guys were expecting, I guess it is concerning that this sounds outright bad. N54s and 55s just sound boring stock, not “bad”.

I was at the MotoGP race this past weekend. It does not sound like a N55 with a bad exhaust. It actually sounds really good.

I hope you're right and the broadcast quality was bad, but I don't think non HD affects sound quality that much...

In fairness, did anyone expect this to sound like an NA V8?

That video is very underwhelming though, can’t deny that.

That car has way more power than the new M4. And I don't believe it has stock exhaust. Stock headers aren't on the car either. I'm sure that once some modifications are done to the M4, it will sound a lot better.

There is no modification that can be done to make it sound like a boosted S54.

Someone should put the sound from the M4 video on top of a video of a civic revving and you won't be able to hear the difference lol.

I watched it rip around Circuit of Americas Fri, Sat, Sun. I think I got a good idea of what it sounds like in person. Oh and no rasp, which was surprising. I have seen many comparing it the raspy E46 M3. I had an E46 M3, it wasn't even close in sound. The safety car has a titanium exhaust with no cats, so take that into consideration.

It sounds really good in person with exhaust mods. None of the videos I have heard captures the true sound.

It doesn't sound like an S54 at all in person. It was a unique sound. It did have the turbo fart sound on upshift, typical of most new turbo cars these days.

I'm sure it does sound a lot better in person. Exactly why I am not moved by these $#@!ty quality recordings. I'll wait until they hit the streets.

I was a doubter or hater about the exhaust as well. M3/M4 with stock exhaust I bet will sound like crap or too quiet. I was expecting to hear a sh*tbox going into the weekend, trust me. I am just being honest about what I heard. The safety car had titanium exhaust and no cats. It was loud, not raspy, and had its own unique sound. It was one thing that would have kept me from possibly getting one in the future. But after the race weekend, it changed my mind. Is it a S65, hell no.

The S54 sounds amazing. I like the raspy exotic tone. There is no other six like it.
