This is the 2015 F82 M4 S55 twin turbo inline-6 startup and exhaust note sound

BMW had the new 2015 F82 M4 out in Long Beach, California for the Grand Prix last weekend. Fortunately, someone was able to record the startup and exhaust note sounds along with a few revs. The engine noise is not exactly what we have come to expect from BMW M. You be the judge but this is not the best sounding inline-6 engine that the M division has ever produced, that much is certain.

One of the onlookers yells 'Sounds like my Prius' which may be the best assessment yet.

I am actually disapointed. Going to need some exhaust work to be done for sure perhpas opening up the exhaust flow.

Sounds like any of their turbocharged inline-6s. Nothing special, will definitely need to be opened up. Then again, you can't expect this to sound like a N/A engine, the turbos muffle the sound big time.

It definitely won't sound like the previous generation motors we all know that but I mean... ugh.

Who knows how good the microphone was on the camera that recorded the video. I'll reserve judgment until I hear one in person. It's obviously not going to sound like a V8, but I'm thinking it doesn't sound like a wet fart in person.

BMW is just a bunch pussies now. Their cars are so tamed in every aspect, compared to the last generation. Definitely not the same BMW, it seems like they fired everyone and hired a whole new group of money hungry $#@!s who care nothing for performance and the "Ultimate Driving Machine". Just look at GM, I highly doubt this thing will come any close to a Z28 for the same price. Two different classes though, but still, the Z28 will leave this thing way way in the dust, there will be no contest.

Sounds terrible...but I agree that we don't know the quality of recording device, its most likely a cell phone. I'll wait to see what it sounds like in person. Faster, lighter, and easily modded (let's hope)...it will be a winner in my book. If sound is the only issue then so be it. BMW ditched the NA v8 for now, it is what it is.

It's not the end of the world but man with Ford coming out with a flat-plane crank V8...

When a Mustang revs it will make you orgasm. When an M4 revs it will make people talk about a Prius.

Wow, that sounds...terrible. Raspy, civic terrible

I really hope it's the mic. I'd love to at least consider this an option after first year kinks are worked out. Tuners have their sites on it and I'm very very anxious to see what they can do with this platform.

I'm not saying you have to but that is going to be the best sounding motor other than something from Italy.

Who cares, it's a badass car. My N54 sounds almost silent, but is badass for what is.

The S65 sounds amazing as do all modern Mustangs (they sound better). I still own a TT I6 for a reason (not enough garage space to own them all).

It sounds crappy. There are some rolling vids with shifting too - it farts on shifts like the twin turbo V8 - like in the X6M...it farts also and that is a V8. I don't get what they are doing with their exhausts. They should be able to make it sound better.

There is that official video with it rolling through the dark past all the other gens. The vid is awesome, it looks the business. At the end it revs it's motor and I literally LOLed the first time I heard it.

I agree on the base models. I cant' agree on the M models until I drive the new M3/M4 : )

As to money-grubbing, that is the point of business and really the only point. BMW has never been more successful.

Even BMW will tell you that the previous gen M3 was not the fastest in it's price-range. That isn't the point; it is a balance of street with the ability to hit the track. Z28 is a monster, but there is not a huge overlap between people looking at M3/M4s and Z28s...very different cars.

I think you posted the wrong vid, this was the vid for the s65 where the doverman gets scared when it revs.

If you watch MotoGP you can hear it under hard acceleration when it takes off for the safety lap...it sounds like an N55 with a bad exhaust on it, loud with no quality.

Sounds like a typical Civic with a fart can.

Edit: There is really quite a bit of water in that exhaust. Maybe that is affecting the sound somewhat?

BMW was never known for the best sounding exhaust notes. Besides the S85, nothing else from BMW comes close. Yea, the S65 is loud, but what V8 isn't. This car will perform much better than an other M. The exhaust can be modified.
