Quattro vs. X-Drive - The Audi Q5 takes on the new X3 in a test of AWD prowess

The video speaks for itself but we must say we were very surprised with this result. What happened to Quattro?

This is ridiculous, this test was clearly done to favor the X3 as the Q5 had improper tires. This is BMW propoganda.

Heh, ok, so the defense now is A. woman driver and B. tires.

    How about C. Quattro failed?

^^ Haha. They'll need to do something a bit more scientific than that. I dunno what, but a Top Gear-esque faceoff is in order, I think.

I'm going to have to say Audi has the better AWD system. Some of their older cars are pretty beefy too. X-Drive by BMW is pale in comparison when it comes to actual performance driving. They only use it for "city-fide" vehicles. I'd stick to Subaru, Mitsubishi or Audi if I wanted an AWD sports car. Nissan only for their GTRs. I wouldn't buy a 911 with AWD.

It's hard to believe the Audi wouldn't spin front and rear in zero traction conditions. Maybe it had an open diff and the far side was spinning, but had inadequate traction to get going.
Woman driver? Who do you think these vehicles are made for?!

When I was shopping for a winter 3 series car I read a great review where they drove each candidate up a mountain pass that was evenually closed due to snow. The winner was the one that got the furthest before it got stuck. Not very scientific either, but a lot of fun.

Audi has Torsen central diff, which sends a multiplicative torque to the axle having more grip. In this case one axle senses zero torque and the differential sends 3 x zero power to the axle with grip. 3 x 0 is not too much... so you know the result without even watching the video...

Very good insight, makes complete sense. So would you argue the X-drive system is superior?

X-drive is superior for this test. However, no system is perfect, meaning that X-drive has its own weak points. Torsen differentials are quite nice in general.

    What would be those weaknesses?
