BMW will debut a 9-Series concept in Beijing later this month based on the G11 7-Series and Rolls Royce Ghost platform with Gran Lusso styling cues

A 9-Series sedan definitely appears to be on the way with BMW debuting the concept car later this month at the Beijing auto show in China. This car will share the long wheelbase G11 platform that the next generation 7-Series expected to come in 2016 will use. Rolls Royce also will use this platform for the Ghost sedan which currently shares the F01 7-Series platform. The 9-Series will apparently try to bridge a gap between the Ghost and the 7-Series.

Is there room in there for a more expensive BMW? Maybe. Mercedes did fail with Maybach when they tried to take the S-Class too far upscale. Rolls Royce is currently positioned as filling that high end sphere and doing well in that role. BMW is all about variants and squeezing out sales but how the 9-Series will differ exactly from the 7-Series and Rolls Royce Ghost remains to be seen. The one area we do know about is the styling which will be based on the Gran Lusso Concept.

That concept car actually made a bit more sense as it was a coupe and if it were produced would fill the 8-Series gap. BMW does not have a competitor for the new S-Class coupe. If BMW is making a 9-Series though it is a fairly good bet that a new 8-Series will come as well on this same platform.

Twin Turbo V12 power from the N74 seems certain. BMW would likely tweak the larger N74B66 for the 9-Series and leave the smaller N74B60 for the 7-Series to create a point of differentiation that is larger than just cosmetics. That would mean the Ghost and the 9-Series would share the 562 horsepower 6.6 liter version of the V12 which no BMW model currently utilizes.

Will the 9-Series cannibalize Ghost sales? Will an 8-Series make a comeback? Is this even a good idea? We will have to wait and see how this all unfolds.

Yes, they are going to show the 9 Series. As well as the Return of the Mack, the 8 Series. The G11 chassis has an even higher degree of modularity than the F01 chassis that spawned the F06 6 Series, F07 GT, F10 5 Series, F11 5 Series Wagon, F12 6 Cabriolet and F13 6Coupe.

I am looking forward to seeing the 8 Series and 9 Series as they will spotlight new interior direction and design language. BMW AG trademarked 660i three years ago, that may be for down the road but I want to see the 840i, 850i and 860i!

The 960i is going to be very interesting to say the least, as this model moves seriously upmarket and below Rolls-Royce. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!

I do look forward to a new 8-Series. I think the 9-Series may be too much but we will see.

I can't really see a market for this thing. If you target high-end luxury cars, you need a well-established brand that is different from the run-of-the-mill cars. I had thought BMW understood that and didn't make the same mistake as Mercedes (with the Maybach fail, brand was too old for anyone to connect with and the car looked too much like a blown-up S class) or Volkswagen (Phaeton failure, but apparently Piech's learning curve there is flatlining too as they're planning a successor). Keeping the Rolls Royce brand for that market segment seemed like a smart move. Putting a 9 series with the same badge as any ordinary 1 series or SAV for sale in a market segment above the 7 series (which is already difficult to sell) seems foolish to me.

I could also understand an 8 series, as there is no big coupé to rival the Mercedes in that niche. But a sedan somewhere between 7 series and Ghost? I just don't see that.

BMW should instead capitalise on what is left of their reputation for agile sports cars, and bring out something to rival the Porsche Cayman or Audi TTRS, as well as the SLS / Audi R8. That may not sit well with the tree-hugger types but I'm reasonably certain it would be selling like hotcakes.

i was actually expecting this from bmw

    1 series sedan
    2 series coupe
    3 series sedan
    4 series coupe
    5 series sedan
    6 series coupe
    7 series sedan
    8 series coupe

you would think that's how it should work..instead BMW threw it way out of wack with this GT and Gran Coupe bull$#@!

I agree with this. I think a very high end coupe with a bmw badge on it will be tough to sell. I feel like bmw should rebadge the 9 series under some different name or just let roll royce badge it.

If the 9 series will be between the 7 and the Ghost, I'd imagine it would have a tag of 150-180k. I just don't see many ppl spending that type of money on a car wearing a bmw badge.

you can get a fully loaded 760 for around ~$140k. i think this 9 series would start around $190k but the main problem is the whole platform sharing thing. once potential Ghost buyers find out the car is just an overdone BMW 9 series the same thing that happened to Benz is going to happen to this.

    That's what I was thinking as well. I don't feel a 9 is necessary.

They'll this expensive 7-Class variant but won't do an M1? WTFBBQ??!?!?!?

I really don't see where this would fit...what is it supposed to be competing against...their own Ghost? The Flying Spur? That's about all I can think of...or the new MB Pullman "600" successor...I guess that makes sense. A new 8 series needs to happen though and I'm excited for that. M8 anyone?

I'm thinking so, perhaps an S74 with at least 650-675 hp and as much torque? Perfectly reasonable, given what the N74 is capable of already.

Definitely within reason. I'm all for an M twin turbo V12. I'm all in for that. Sounds suuuuuper efficient and dynamic hustling 4000+ pounds of German metal around.

Could be a weapon...if it's CF-intensive, it might be the same weight as an M6 GC...with over a hundred more HP and torque. I'd be...so down for that. Oh man. I can't think of a better luxury car.
