M Badges on a front wheel drive BMW and no this is not a joke - BMW 2-Series Active Tourer M Sport

This would be funny if it was not so sad. BimmerBoost joked about BMW producing an M version of the 2-Series Active Tourer but things are getting absurdly close to that ridiculous notion coming true. Introducing the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer M Sport. This is your standard Active Tourer 225i but with larger wheels, a body kit, M colored stitching, and some M badging on the interior. You know, as a link to all of those front wheel drive M cars that do not exist.

An M version is now closer to reality and the M division simply has lost its luster when you just plaster the M badge on anything, literally anything, in the lineup for extra cash. BimmerBoost would make a bigger of mockery of this if it was not so absurd to begin with. WTF happened to you BMW?

Up to this point I haven't cared much about the m badges on "m sport" cars in the line up. First the m235 came and overused the badge... now this? WTF Bmw? This is getting absurd.

I've always thought they were doing this to compete with audi and amg but audi has a "RS" line to differentiate from the "S" line. Whats bmw going to do?

I keep thinking, if this new direction is there to boost revenues and the M models we love stay true, then who cares right? That line of thinking would hold up if they didn't slap M badges all over thier entire line up!!!! I read in a car mag, the M235 has 13 M badges on it in total .... LOLLLLL They were making fun of it.

Only logical for BMW. They have offered an M sport kit (= body kit, wheels, interior) for every car in their line-up. Hell, you can order a 114i M sport if you want to. So why not the front wheel pampers bombers as well?

Audi also offers their S line with everything, as does Mercedes with their AMG line. Simply logical that BMW also offers it for the new FWD cars.

I agree that it's a joke to associate such a car with anything remotely sportive, but if people want to buy it...their choice. Apparently BMW seems to think that this widespread use of the M badge will not be detrimental to the overall image of the M division. Their sales success proves them right so far.

i agree it hasn't hurt them so far but before they would put a "m sport kit" on the car and have a subtle approach to using the M badge on that model. Now they are putting it right in the name (m235), on the side of the car (where the side marker is) and all over the interior. While Merc and audi do the same, they haven't put it in the actual name of the car unless it was really a "s" car (s3, s4..etc.) It seems bmw is taking Merc and Audi's marketing approach and going a step further by really washing down the car with the M logo.

I guess as long as the true M cars stay true to what we like...it doesn't matter. I do like how lately, the M division is focusing on weight, only good things can come from that.

i think BMW is paying attention to those people who used to buy e46 328i's and would put m badges on them. m badges look cool. smfh

This is ridiculous. The interesting part is that BMW decided to "kinda sorta" start to differentiate their "sport" models using the "is" designation, then decided to instead dilute the M brand and confuse everyone by putting an M on anything that has an aero-kit. I don't understand it. I would think buying an M for one person means nothing to another, but BMW thinks the opposite - that M equates "better" for everyone.

Even 'is' is too much for this garbage but why in the hell have they abandoned using the 'is' badge in situations like this?

It's silly, and I really hope someone at the ///mmmMarketing division at BMW or M GmbH is reading this and making some changes (read: is getting fired and looking for a job). There should be no question as to what an M is or means, even if someone isn't really into motorsport.

I honestly think this whole thing is going to hurt everyone in the long run when they try to sell their cars off down the line. The differences between the models isn't clear-cut-dry, and I would bet that 99% of people buying a used BMW will not know or care to look at "what M meant at the time the car was sold"

Just like the "competition package" on the M5 - it's a stupid idea. The people who actually are buying the M5 for what it is are getting hit with the "cost" of buying the highest performing model. The owner is going to have a hell of a time finding any value of this package when they sell/trade their car in the future.

It's literally all the marketing division ruining this; it doesn't clarify anything to a purist, and confuses literally everyone including the purists. I would bet their whole internal reasoning for the "3 and 4 series" designation is to rip everyone off wanting 2 doors. It's stupid - and they are taking it way too far.

That's what it is supposed to mean, Motorsport. What f'ing Motorsport does this a front wheel drive BMW badged mini-van have to do with? Doesn't anyone at the M Division feel stupid seeing the symbol that represents what they do on this pile of junk? It's just to the point where I don't know what to say.

A while back a guy at my work has seen my m3 parked outside so he came up to me and was like hey man, you can appreciate this, i'm looking at getting the new X1M. I said there was no X1M and he said yea there is and told me about his experience at the dealer where he speced a x1 out with the m package. I just told him it was cool and to enjoy it. I didn't feel like explaining that his x1 was just getting a aero package and it wasn't on the same level as the x5M or my m3.

Kinda sad, he legit thought it was way more than just a X1 with a $2500 M aero package and some M logos...Oh well....

My head would have exploded or that discussion would have ended with a fist fight. Pretty much like every car discussion I have with a 'regular' person.
