The 2015 F80/F82 M3 and M4 are note as light as we were led to believe - Curb weight will be in the 3400 pound range

BMW is doing a great job hyping up the new M3 and M4 and they got a lot of attention by posting a 3306 pound weight figure for the cars. That is definitely light and it undercuts the E46 M3 by over 100 pounds let alone the even heavier E9X generation. BMW said the new car is 80 kilograms lighter than the E9X which depending on options is around 3580 pounds. Subtracting 80 kilograms (176) pounds from that gives us 3404 pounds. So what is going on?

Well, the BMW weight figures posted are dry weight not curb weight. That means BMW's figure for the weight of the car is with no fluids or fuel. Obviously the car can not be driven like that so when the vehicles actually are driven off the lot they will be over 3400 pounds. BMW did this on purpose to skew the weight figure for attention and to exaggerate their weight loss figures.

BMW confirmed the weight for the M4 is the dry weight in the press release for the new 2014 M4 DTM car, "The BMW M4 Coupé itself is a prime example of intelligent, lightweight construction. The high-performance sports car weighs just 1,497 kilograms when empty – that is a whole 80 kilograms less than its predecessor."

So, expect E46 M3 levels of weight for the car and not the 3300 pound range we were misled into believing. Yes, still lighter than the E9X. Just not by ~300 pounds.

Nothing surprising there. It's what I always said - it's basically the weight of the E92 335i.

Also, it should be mentioned that the weight savings become less obvious when you spec it up like it will be done in 99% of orders, e.g. with the DCT plus loads of options. I also believe the advertised weight figures published by BMW include the carbon ceramic brakes, for which you have to shell out a few thousands extra.

Yeah, the weight savings just never added up. The 435i listed on bmwusa is over 3,600lbs. A couple carbon body panels and drive shaft are not going to get you down to 3,300lbs.

    Dry weight explains it.

Also consider the majority of M3/M4 will not be optioned with the expensive carbon ceramics.

I guarantee BMW includes the 40+ lbs of weight savings from carbon ceramics in their marketing numbers.

well either way the weight difference shouldn't be too upsetting, the car is still going to be significantly faster than the e92 m3. we should ask bmw for a M4 CSL

Of course it's going to be faster. When has a newer M3 ever been slower than the previous gen?

They said they do not intend to build a CSL but who knows. BMW is like some irrational woman.

to me the m4 is just a suped up version of the 1m and 335i fused. there is nothing really special about this car in my opinion i think bmw needs new designers.

The M235i is 3,505 pounds with the ZF box. That means with options and such, it'll probably weight more then the e92 M3!

Lets see it on some independent scales. Most references to US weights are hokey.

ALL manufacturers do this crap with dry weight so no disappointment here. If I can find it i'll post a link but some exotics have been advertised with "semi" wet weights to get a one up on companies posting dry weights...smh.

Hasn't BMW always shown dry weight. So wouldn't the e46 numbers be dry weight as well?
