Evolve Stage II NA Package Review (Video Inside)

    Introduction

Coming from an N54 powered 135i, I am quickly adjusting to the work of art that is the S65. Sure itís a lot less torquier but the power delivery is far more elegant and refined. I also love the fact that I am in a proper naturally aspirated car, I am addicted to the throttle response and could not be happier.

I had decided that for the first summer season that I would learn to drive the car in its NA glory before contemplating a supercharger system. That said; I wanted to extract as much NA power as possible out of the vehicle so the search began for a primary cat delete x-pipe and complementary tune that gave me the features I was looking for. My search lead me to Evolve, their proven results, their M-Power pedigree and their BMW tuning expertise made it an easy decision.

I sent an email to Sal@Evolve just prior to Christmas and so began the journeyÖ.

    Customer Service

I define and measure quality customer service as:

    • doing what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it
    • demonstrating a willingness to follow up without provocation
    • responsiveness

In my interactions with Evolve (Sal, Imran and Rizwan) they have mostly demonstrated each of these attributes. The group feels like a real cohesive team, they communicate with each other and conveyed a consistent message. There were no disconnects whatsoever.

Upon initial order, Rizwan informed me that due to the Christmas season, the X-pipe was in production and would be available by the 3rd week of January. Sure enough, I was contacted by Rizwan on Jan 16th that the X-pipe was produced and would be in stock and ready to ship on the 21st. I was provided a tracking number and the stage II package containing X-Pipe, Filter and EvolveR cable was received on Jan 27th.

Because Evolve is over in the UK and I am in Canada, communication could be tricky as I only have a 4 hour window in the morning to communicate and I am extremely busy at work. Their communication was consistent and timely including the turn around on the tuning file. I would not hesitate to do business with Evolve again.

    Rating: 8.5 out of 10

    Product

The stage II package is advertised as containing a BMC filter, EvolveR cable and X-Pipe. As advertised, all items arrived in the package which was put together professionally in bubble wrap to ensure the contents were protected during its journey from overseas. There is nothing more frustrating than ordering something that is delivered incomplete, Evolve delivered.
The quality of the X-Pipe is exceptional. The welds are flawless and the overall construction of the pipe is a thing of beauty. My mechanic (Ivo from Columbus Automotive), marveled at the quality of the piece, the stainless steel construction is phenomenal.

All of the mounting hardware was included in the package, excellent attention to detail here to avoid a potentially frustrating experience. X-Pipe fitment can only be described as OEM. The piece bolted right up to the headers and stock rear section without any fuss or bother. The O2 sensors seated nicely and the install was flawless overall.

The EvolveR cable did exactly as advertised; I downloaded the software from the Evolve site and quickly and efficiently conducted a full diagnostic read of my ECU using my Asus netbook. Simple and very intuitive software made the process error proof. Overall it took my 36 minutes to conduct the full diagnostic read and file download and off the file went to data@evolveautomotive.com.

Turn around was a little longer than I would have liked but to be fair, I did send the file on a Friday afternoon, long after Evolve was closed for the day. I received both the 240E stock update along with my tune. It took about 10 minutes apiece to upload these updates and I was off and running. Simply, easy and worked as expected.

Rating: 10 out of 10 (would rate 11 out of 10, itís that good)

    Performance

We have established the quality of the product and the OEM fitment but what was the performance like? It did not disappoint. The X-Pipe provided for an instant feeling of more responsiveness throughout the power band. The car felt more aggressive and significantly more bad intentioned. The car seemed to lurch forward even with subtle jabs at the throttle. The tune clearly made the throttle response even that much more sharp. I had requested the following features:

    • 93/94 Octane Tune
    • Rev limit increase to 8500
    • Top Speed Governor Delete
    • Primary Cat CEL Delete
    • Cold Start Cycle Delete
    • Burble & Overrun Feature
    • Servotronic Calibration

The sound also changed, much fiercer, that of a proper race bred vehicle. It put an instant smile on my face. From idle to 3000 rpm, the overall sound was stock, once you crept passed 3k, the note became much more open and throatier, even paired with the OEM rear section. On cold start, the revs are a bit raspy but that is to be expected. As the car gets up to operating temperature, the sound evens out.

With the primary cats removed, the induction noise from the front of the house was also much more pronounced and very addicting. With the servotronic calibration, the steering becomes heavier, which I like. Even in stock M mode, the steering tightened up, Evolve has been successful at further refining this feeling, connecting me even more to the road. This is a very under rated feature that I am glad I had requested.

Overall, the performance is indeed very noticeable and I could not be happier. It really is incredible how much the S65 responds to a primary cat delete and updated tune. Evolve has really nailed it! I will be getting to the dyno when winter breaks to provide proper performance documentation, stay tuned.

    Rating: 9 out of 10

    Conclusion

I am extremely happy that I decided on Evolve. Their products are exceptional, the service is solid and their commitment to delivering the results is second to none. I said this before but it just felt as if there was a team working behind the scenes to meet my expectations. I would recommend the Evolve products to anyone and when the time comes to look at a supercharger option, Evolve will be at the top of my list.

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10

Following is a video of the sound of the X-pipe paired with the OEM rear section, enjoy:

I did my fair share of research on this and the reasons are as follows:

    1. BMW M Tuning Pedigree
    2. Proven Results
    3. Trust (you never hear stories about poor tuning, stealing tunes, blowing up engines from Evolve)

Nicely done. Exhaust craftsmanship is great, and we know the tuning is spot on - several S65 customer give us the same great feedback - great power, smooth throttle - couldn't be happier

Just wait till you get some boost IrishAce, its a game changer

I like the Apex Arc 8s but I really went with them due to the massive unsprung weight loss, 19lbs vs stock 27lb rim.

I cannot believe how much of a difference lightweight performance rims make. The car is so much more responsive and feels so much quicker and agile. Very happy with the Arc 8s.

That's about exactly what she should make.

If you want to get into the ~380's order up some scoops from RPI (you will not regret this) and grab an underdrive pulley. You will be very happy, trust me.
