    Turbo Blanket on stock N54 turbos?

    I have an 07 without an oil cooler. I do plan on tuning here kinda soon, and always have heat on my mind. Would I get any benefits from using a turbo blanket on stock turbos?

    Negative effects of using one? (like the metal not being able to dissipate heat properly - probably way off on that)

    Would I even be able to get it on properly without dismantling half the engine bay?

    Anyone currently have this with significant reduction in oil temps, hell even IATs?

    Just curious, and thank you.

    Plus I am at higher altitude, which means the turbos are going to be pushing themselves harder even stock, thus creating more heat....

    I doubt you'd be able to fit one where these turbos are located, but I'm no expert.

    Do not bother, the stock manifolds are made with air gaps between them which help dissipate heat, on bigger turbos the blankets are used to keep the heat in and help promote better spool, the housings on these turbos are already so small, no gains in spool will be had and honestly these things generate so much heat, you want to get as much out of them as possible, not keep it in.

    +1. Wouldn't be beneficial on stock housing turbo configurations.

    Your stock manifold is in essence a thermos. Kinda like the thermos you keep coffee in, except BMW keeps their exhaust in this one. And it's metal. And it limits the exhaust flow on hybrid turbos.

    Does a pretty damn good job with heat though.

    That is what I linked to above.

    An oil cooler in my mind is stupid expensive. I don't track the car, aside from future 1/4 mile runs, and I think my $1500ish could be spent better elsewhere. You really think it's necessary to run a cooler? Motul 5w-40 xcess has done a pretty good job keeping temps in check...

    oil cooler is a must on these cars. buy a used oil housing/cooler and put it on yourself. i sold my stock oil cooler for like $100 and that person went out and bought a oil housing

    Not to be combative, but really?? I would understand if I was taking the car on track days every weekend, but for a DD that I am just trying to get some more power out of?
    I have only seen oil temps get to 260 once or twice and that was me pushing the car pretty hard on some mountain roads in the middle of summer.

    BMW realized these cars needed oil coolers right after they released them, this is exactly why the very next model year had one. I would suggest to any early 07 cars without an oil cooler, upgrade to one daily driver or not, heat is the enemy of your engine.

    Somone took the time to make these and charges $400 dollars for them. That is a prime example of not understanding the components you are making the product for. Putting these on your car would not help spool one bit and would keep more heat in the turbos then they already retain, which would normally be a good thing, not on these little guys.

    260* is pretty hot. I've never seen 260*, not even after a hot lap pass at the dragstrip down here in Florida. 250* is hot and that's as hot as mine gets (I have an 09') usually it's ~230 on highway and ~240 on more spirited drives, that was all in the summer, car has been garaged/in the shop now since early November.

    First off, the oil temp sensor for the N54 is in the oil pan --not the head where it was on earlier BMW motors. The oil is 15-20 degrees hotter in the pan than in the head.

    More importantly, a high quality synthetic can handle 300 degrees. Before I addressed oil cooling on my heavily tracked (circuit) 1M, I'd regularly see 280-290 F during 20-30 minute sessions.

    The Blackstone oil analyses never showed any breakdown of the oil.

    Most tunes including the stock DME I believe starts to dial things back at either 260* or 270*, 280-290 is crazy hot, you should be running an upgraded cooling system for sure. I mean hey, you can do what you want, but most engines don't run much past 200, our motor already runs on the hot side, no reason to push things unnecessarily

    1M DME doesn't begin pulling timing until 300 degrees. FWIW, my on track coolant temps are 210-215 F.

    EDIT: Since replacing my stock oil cooler with a 32-row Setrab based system and an Improved Racing 212 F thermostat, my oil temps on track have dropped to 250-260 F.

    Additionally, the 1M comes with an auxilliary radiator, more powerful fan and different coolant-related programming.
