Quality cellaring makes all the difference. It's pointless to store wine for an extended period at room temp especially considering temp fluctuation.

Hess is excellent for the price. I wouldn't put it at 92 but it's a great value.

2006 Silver oak cab (the Alexander Valley) is the worse vintage for that wine and a lot of CA cabs. Most restaurants can't give that $#@! away. I had a 2007 SO Alexander Valley last night that was nice. I disagree with Sticky that anything less than the Napa is a waste (although I did get my 3L 09 Napa in yesterday - anniversary gift for the wife since we got married in 09 and spent one of our 2 honeymoons in Napa). I usually like big and bold but wanted something a little light last night. The 07 did the trick

I don't disagree the Napa is better just as pretty much any reserve is better than the standard vintage. I'm just saying certain vintage Alexander Valley Silver Oaks are decent wines if you can get them for the right price. I wouldn't write the SO AV off is all. Makes a good Monday or Tuesday night wine.

I understand what you are saying and I do not necessarily disagree. However, I may be spoiled and the Alexander just does not do it for me any longer. I'd say the same thing about Grgich Hills which I used to think was a fantastic wine. If it's not the SO Napa I won't drink it. Yes, I'm a snob.

Is the Silver Oak Napa a blend of the best from Napa and Silver Oak Alexander is just the grapes from Alexander Valley?

I consider myself a snob too but like the Alexander Valley (certain vintages 05/07 specifically) as a light, knock-around wine. Our palettes are just different I guess. I've been getting into Syrahs a little more too lately

    Everyone has their own "tastes"...............

I like bold fruity USA Cabs with that dark cherry fruit and a little vanilla, coffee or ash, BOLD South Aussie Shiraz, West Aussie Chardonnays and old fashioned NAPA maloactic Chardonnays (not those new lemon like zesty light weights they mainly sell today)............

I bleeding well hate even the BEST Red Burgundies... they remind me of childhood cough medicine and glues

Having a 1/2 bottle of the 2007 Faust Cabernet which I previously rated so highly but today it is just not happening.... think after drinking Lewelling and Hewitt I can see where this falls a little by the way side.. still a very good wine to drink at 1pm while I start shorting some stocks and all

Lewelling and Hewitt are both quite superior to that wine. Significantly so.

Had the '11 Mollydooker Maitre'D last night. Cab/syrah blend. Nice mouthfeel, but a little too sweet for my tastes. And I thought I could smell just the smallest hint of green bell pepper which threw me off. I understand that might be due to pyrazines?

The Boxer is still my go to Mollydooker. Too bad they were sold out.

It's very sweet and fruit forward but lacks the complexity of the more expensive Mollydooker wines. The green bell pepper is due to the syrah.

The Boxer being straight Syrah works very well.

I hear you about the lacking complexity part. It really is a one-note wonder.

I had a white wine (can't remember what kind) when I was tasting in SB that was dominated by the bell pepper smell. I really couldn't stand it.

I thought that bell pepper scents in reds were undesirable.

And if it's from the syrah, why doesn't the Boxer have that scent since it's 100% syrah?

It really depends. Some wines take non-traditional characteristics and enhance them as a signature style. The Heitz Martha's vineyard for example enhances a mint taste.

Differ Syrah grapes will have different characteristics. Mollydooker doesn't use the same grapes for each Syrah.

I am on www.cellartracker.com as dogsbrekky with most of my tasting notes... I generally do not put notes on the sub $20 wines.

Note - If I have a bias towards a style, my rating may be 2 points higher than what others would think (eg good NAPA Cabs and South Aussie Shiraz styles)
