BMW states the i8 is all about performance - Is the BMW i8 a high performance sports car?

BMW is on the i8 offensive releasing a video recently attempting to convince the public that the BMW i8 is all about performance. BimmerBoost just is not buying what BMW is trying to sell in the video below. In one breath the BMW representative states the i8 is all about performance and then quickly switches the subject to discussing the i8's 'beauty' and design. Drop the act BMW, the i8 is clearly all about pushing the i brand and creating a trendy hybrid for attention and not a high performance hybrid sports car.

Yes, the car is beautiful. Yes, it is efficient despite its fairly limited range. It is very difficult to take this car seriously as a $130,000+ high performance sports car with a tiny three cylinder turbo motor. 231 horsepower from the gasoline motor simply does not cut it in this price range. Talking about the 154 horsepower per liter will not distract performance enthusiasts from that reality.

With Porsche taking hybrid performance to the extreme in the 918 Spyder the i8 feels underwhelming. Especially considering the all electric Tesla Model S sedan offers higher performance without even needing a three-cylinder crutch. Is it beautiful? Yes. Is it a high performance car? No.

Yeah but dumbasses are going to buy them faster than they can make them. Reaffirming what BMW already knows....that slow fuel efficient supercars are the future! Lol!

BINGO. I for one wonder "who" buys this car for that amount of coin. Hard (if not impossible) to justify the expense in my opinion.

No doubt this will sell especially in SoCal where a car is just a fashion accessory.

I just wouldn't be able to handle getting destroyed by a Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG for a fraction of the cost.

I mean, $130k+? 400 horsepower at the minimum. Even that wouldn't cut it.

You could have a Prius and a $100k performance car [991 Carrera S, GT-R, etc] for the same amount of money as this car. Who the hell would pick this?

And he actually admits it has turbo lag at 1:50. WTH is BMW thinking?

BMW wants i to succeed so this is the halo car.

I'd prefer a Z4M to this but hey what can you do...

The i8 is to performance as the m5 is to fuel efficient.
Sure the i8 has some performance just like the m5 has some fuel efficiency...

400hp until battery runs out. Still would like to know how long can you drive the crap out of it, before you are putting around in a $130k 3-cylinder car. At some point you have to plug it in, it is after all a plugin hybrid.

Honestly the Volkswagen hybrid setup they are investing in with the self-contained 100 horsepower motors in each wheel makes more sense. 400 hp plus add whatever gasoline motor you want. Makes far more sense from a performance perspective...

although the car is beautiful I wouldnt dish out $100k for something that cannot beat even the silliest car outhere it would have to be either the M4's new engine or a modded Tri-Turbo DIESEL a la M5d

This would've been the perfect car to bring back the V10 in the form of a S85B58 or even a S65B40 or f*ck it even the S63tu.

But no, BMW is no longer a performance car company. It is now a technology company trying to "pave the way for the future" by sacrificing sheer driving pleasure and cathartic adrenaline pumping, heart pounding, pure joy with stupid a$$ hybrid engines and "bespoke lightweight components" that make up for the lack of power from the pussy ass hybrid three cylinder motor.

Partnering with Toyota on a new "hybrid sports car"... are you kidding me?
Front wheel drive? No more naturally aspirated engines in the line up?

This is a joke, and is why I will only be buying Porsches or Ferraris after I'm done with my E92 M3...

    Thank god I'm rich

It's an F'ing shame this chassis isn't getting an M variant.

Ok, fine, you douche nozzles want your hybrid halo go ahead and do it. Now give M the chassis to show you what high performance really is.

The whole point of the M division is to make M variants. So have this stupid hybrid hippies jerk off to and then have an M version that runs on baby seal tears.

This is a car that had a chance to be extraordinary but the powertrain choice was a joke at best. Beautiful, yes. Good performer? Not for this amount of money by any means. I'll take a R8 any day

I'm not sure what performance enthusiast would take this over... well, just about anything for $100k and up.

Slightly lol. My first brand new car was a E92 M3 DCT, but not nearly as awesome as yours, it was just FBO but dearly miss it. Congrats on the record since I wasn't registered back then, love the development here!

The M3 is just getting into its groove. With turbos the E92 is going to be king of the BMW pack. Well, unless the S85's get into the mix. Which they may...

I hope to see S85s continue to grow, Gintani makes me hopeful with the goods they're developing, and I'm about the biggest turbo fanatic around so I want another E92 M3 just to TT it lol. I was working on making my own manifolds when I had mine but space was too much of a factor. Kudos to Gintani
