BMW brings their answer to the Macan to LA - 2014 BMW Concept F26 X4 pictures, outgunned?

This is what BMW will use to compete against the Porsche Macan, the 2014 BMW X4. BMW essentially is trying to have lightning strike their SUV lineup twice by taking the X6 concept downscale. Will it work? Well, if the X6 is any indication then yes it will. The problem is it will have to go up against the Macan. With the Macan S model offering 40 more horsepower than the X4 xDrive35i likely will and absolutely no answer for the Macan Turbo BMW might need to consider an X4M model.

The X4 will utilize the X3 drivetrain and platform just as the X6 does with the X5. Assuming the X4 follows the precedent set it is already outgunned by both the Macan S and Turbo. Both models offer more power, torque, as well as a quicker shifting dual clutch transmission to the 8-speed automatic used in the X3.

Will the X4 receive an update? It will almost need it especially considering there also is the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG to contend with. Is the vehicle supposed to just offer different looks from the X3 or actually an improved driving experience? Is it just supposed to generate maximum profit at minimum investment by platform/drivetrain sharing?

We will have to wait and see if BMW does anything interesting with the X4 but as of right now if it does use what is available currently in the X3 then there are more exciting performance options in the segment. Not to mention Audi is bringing the RS Q3 stateside as well.

    "X4 xDrive35i"

For everyone that thinks having a Macan turbo is silly when the Macan S also has a turbo... at least it's not as bad as what BMW is going to call this thing.

I think pricing will be the big factor for who goes after this vehicle rather than the other German options.

With the Macan S starting at $50k I don't think this will ever be more attractive.

The starting price of a Macan Turbo is within $800 of a Cayenne S which is crazy. And I and went nuts with the Porsche configurator as usual, and got it up to $91, 000.

I understand that these underwrite other Porsche cars, but it is just insanity. I do love the carbon fiber interior packages though. When TechArt gets a hold of a Macan it's will most likely be eye-watering cool and expensive.

The F26 X4 in M Sport guise will be very cool. The Germans all know what each other is planning and working on, and with that said I do think BMW will have an answer for the Macan Turbo with an X4 M.

If they build an F26 X4 M with widend bodywork, staggered rims, vented hood, sport seats, 4.7mm thick steering wheel, real brakes with 6-piston on the front and 4-piston on the rear (optional), quad exhaust with a new interpretation and a detuned S55 in-line 6 from the F80 M3/F82 M4 and start it around $70, 900 and it would sell in limited numbers which would work.

Yes, it would cost more than a base Macan Turbo but significantly less than a loaded Macan Turbo. Obviously, Macan transaction prices are yet to be determined, but that could be the template for F26 X4 M market pricing.

Sticky, you have said and we know the small car and CUV is the trending and future battle for the German manufacturers, and the small crossover in the performance segment is going to be interesting fisticuffs. There is an unmet need in this segment, meaning these companies know there is money on the table and lots of it.

Don't be surprised if Porsche partially targets an ignored demographic with the Macan Turbo, young affluent women. Maserati will be going after them with a vengence with their upcoming CUV.

Known & unknown players in segment:
    • Porsche Macan Turbo
    • Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG
    • Audi QS5 (can't recall name)
    • BMW F26 X4 M (projecting here)
    • Maserati Kubang (?)

It's not nearly as pretty as the Macan, that's for sure.

I think you need to compare the Macan S, rather than the Macan turbo, to the Cayenne S. The two S trim cars are very close in lb/hp ratios, but the Macan base MSRP undercuts the Cayenne's by $17k. Thanks to the 7-speed PDK and near equal torque to the Cayenne, the Macan S shaves .4 seconds off the Cayenne S 0-60 time (official from Porsche), and .6" if equipped with Sport Chrono. No doubt the Macan's lighter weight and lower CoG will have it faster around a track than the equivalent Cayenne.

Having typed all of this out, I now see why they de-tuned the 3.0L V6 in the Macan S from the Panamera S spec: the Macan S would have been very close to the Cayenne turbo in performance had they let it have the 420hp output it gets in the Panamera. I can't wait until we get a flash upgrade for the Macan S.

The macan S is the best value in the porsche lineup. If it has the same turbos as the panamera s... well sign me up.

We are going for the SQ5.

Better value than the Mecan S IMO, more utility for our boats, no turbo lag, DSG, torque vectoring, Audi interior, 60k loaded. Launch control and software available soon after release..

Does the SQ5 have DSG? I thought it was the tiptronic...

As stated no DSG but it will be better for towing.

Ah, salesman told us wrong. That's kind of a bummer, I did hear it has a shorter final drive ratio.

As long as it's improved over the current 8-speed i'll be happy. The gearing is quite wide and very reluctant to shift on the track. Kind of expected but that, the brakes and lack of full DSC disengagement on the standard 3.0T are a big let down on the overall experience.

I never intended on the base car to be suitable on the track but it's nice having a standing water car and a car for my dad to do D.E's I instruct for. Simply put the base Q5 3.0T cannot be hot lapped. It's too fast for it's brakes and is plagued by the original Audi understeer and roll. Obviously, had we known the Diesel or SQ was coming here we would've waited for something a little less ordinary

I still like the Macan looks better. The X4/X6 just don't work for me.
