Here is your next generation front wheel drive Mini based BMW X1 testing

Yes the next generation BMW X1 will be based on a Mini platform. Yes, it will be front wheel drive. Yes, BMW aims to sell a whole ton of front wheel drive cars with reports stating they expect the Mini front wheel drive platform to bolster BMW sales by a million units. For those who refuse to believe BMW is selling out the proof is in the spyphotos below. The front wheel drive X1 is coming and no doubt will sell well and offer fat profit margins.

There likely will even be a 1-Series GT based on this platform as well. BMW is really sticking with that GT thing for some reason. Expect the X1 replacement in 2015 as a 2016 model. Hopefully there will at least be an all wheel drive option but the X1 will be less BMW SUV and far more Mini.

This is why I'm buying my current X1. Doubt this piece of $#@! will be able to go 12.1 1/4 mile. And even if it does it won't handle or drive like the current one.

If they can sell a ton of these cars to fund badass m cars, who cares? If the other cars start suffering, then we have something to worry about.

This reminds me of pcar people complaining about the cayenne, in reality it allows porsche to fund the 911, gt3 etc. Bmw is not part of a larger auto group, they are stand alone. No other competitors are like that. They need to keep revenue coming in to keep competing.

This is a FWD BMW. Front. Wheel. Drive. There are lines that shouldn't be crossed, and this is one of those lines.

Regarding the Porsche comparison, the position of the companies couldn't be more different. At the time the Cayenne was released, Porsche was also an independent company but they only made two cars: the 911 and the 986 Boxster. If you didn't want a sports car, you didn't buy a Porsche. They were missing a huge section of the market as a result.

By the time this thing comes out, BMW will have 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 series, with various 2 and 4 door models in each series, along with the Z and X cars. Plus the M division cars, diesels, hybrids, wagons, etc, etc. The only thing you truly can't get from BMW (aside from a high output NA motor) is FWD. And that's because a truly good driver's car (aka the Ultimate Driving Machine) will never, ever, ever have front wheel drive.

Agree with them or not, Porsche's four-door cars are considered the performance benchmarks in their segments. What is this FWD X1 going to compete against? They take this car far enough down market and we'll start to see comparo articles between X1 and a Toyota and a Mazda. Oh boy...

The Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera are the best decisions Porsche has ever made. I'm looking forward to a Macan like answer to the Panamera. A smaller sedan with all drive and PDK plus a twin turbo V6... talk about an M3 fighter .

Hell with the sedan... Bring a coupe version of the Panamera and we'll have the modern-day 928. Drop 400 lbs off the Panamera as the Macan did to the Cayenne, and it will definitely take the fight to the M3.
