Second broken S54 Oil Filter Housing

I have a VT2-500 kit, and this is the second time that one of the bolts on my hydraulic tensioner ripped away from the oil filter housing. I'm getting tired of replacing the $350 part. Any suggestions on how to prevent this? Can I re-enforce this paper thin area?

I replaced my original 65k mile one with a used one in January, and the second used one is the one that broke now. I'm too scared to buy used again, thinking aluminum fatigue over age played a part. I ordered a new one from Tischer. Wondering how to prevent it in the future, or if there are documented cases of this happening more than once and how to fix

Wow sounds crazy. I may just hold on to it just incase. Never heard of such an issue. Seems like that sc bracket maybe putting too much stress on it

I know the Active autowerke S/C kit replaces the hydraulic tensioner with a mechanical style tensioner and im pretty sure you could still use the that oil filter housing because the other style tensioner mounts to the unbroken holes. Not sure what part number tensioner it is maybe AA will be nice a help you with fixing a ess kit. I have installed 4 e46 m3 AA S/C and have never seen this come up.

here's a comparison of the two styles

Thanks for the info, but I already replaced the broken filter. Apparently the new one that BMW sells is much better re-inforced at the area where the bolts go in. Click here to enlarge

Just replaced my oil filter housing after having the charger on the car for about 2500 miles.

My old oil filter housing already had the re-enforcement as shown in the picture (uk 2004).

I wonder if the OP's new filter housing has survived since putting a new instead of 2nd hand OFH on.

Or perhaps he went for the mechanical tensioner?

    I have the ESS 550.
