    X5M DIY cat gut

I have been debating down pipes for awhile now my want list is long and expensive. My G35 turned into a never ending money pit and I promised myself ypthe ///M would be kept simple. I decided to do DIY cat gut, I will follow this up with a custom tune from ECUProgram in Calgary. We will see how things go if I decide to do dynos, before, after the gutted cats and after a tune. Anyway I am not sure if anyone else has attempted this on an X5M so I thought I would document it.

The hole saw was my tool of choice

With the hole saw you can Tear up the cat material pretty quick.

    The material turns to dust

On the edges there is some insulation that peels off pretty quick with the hole saw.

The issue with the hole saw is it's too short

After some pounding with a long flat head screw driver I broke through the first layer of the cat. Then there is about 1/2" of dead space and then another lay of the cat.

I am curious to dyno before and after to see what kind of gains if any this will give. It will certainly reduce a serious restriction.

Thats interesting. Im sure you'll gain some power by doing that, but you'll most likely need a tune now.

Why would you do this, instead of downpipes?

You just wasted some expensive cats, and that material in that bag is worth $$$ intact to a recycler.

Yes I fully expect I will need a tune now, I will also need my tuner to shut off the CEL.

Economic's?? I lost $100 at a cat recycler and saved $2,000 on down pipes. I am sure aftermarket down pipes will provide better gains but this was free....so I will sacrifice a little power to save myself 2k

honestly where I am from its not even worth my time to take the cats to a recycler. I just threw out two sets of cats I had sitting in my back yard from other projects.

cant get better than a free mod, they are usually few and far-between. Good job.

Thanks guys, I am talking to my tuner now about some dyno time. I am debating installing them myself or have my shop do it. I find free time is pretty rare for me lately so I might have to get the shop to do it.

I havent put them on yet. My local shop wanted $500 to install them and $250 for a base line dyno....So I wont do a dyno and I will likely install them myself. The shop says they have tons of base line X5M dynos...I know its not exact but after I get them installed and tuned I will compair with another one of the X5Ms they have with after market down pipes and a tune.

    That's not a cheap dyno.

With my G35 I became close friends with the shop owner over the years so I am not used of paying for dyno time. We used to dyno my stuff just cause we were bored, we even dynoed my Nissan Titan when i had one of them. He has a Mustang 2wd dyno and a dyno pak 4wd dyno but I am not sure if you need a linked roller dyno (my bmw tuner shop has that) or if the dyno pak is ok?? Even my regular tuning shop only charges $120 for base lines if I recall right so $250 seemed steep. i thought they might cut me a deal because they would be curious as well...

I don't know your area but it wouldn't hurt to look around.

I finally got them on, the exhaust is fairly loud now. Before I think when I raced people it surprised them, now it sounds like it means business you can really hear the turbo whistle now as well....I guess basically it dosent sound like a yuppie SUV anymore which people that raced me before likely figured.

on e the catless pipes were installed the CEL came on shortly after, so I had ECUProgram in calgary tune it. The tuner used his stage II tune (700hp) and will give me a free upgrade to stage II+ (730hp on 94oct). I do hope to get a dyno soon just to see what it actually makes and compare it to his rig with AR down pipes. It is a different beast now with the tune it is unreal how fast it moves for a 5,500lb unit

    I believe it.

Haven't heard of this ECUProgram company but they can likely do what everyone else can. Sounds like it is running strong.

ECUProgram is a local to me company. They also tuned my X5 diesel. They are just getting I to hand held programers....before that you send your ecu in to them so obviously they were not that popular. They also don't really have a presence on any forums.
