Post VAC Motorsports | N54 CNC Ported Head Teaser Vid

I've had these clips on my phone for a while....figured I'd share quickly. We have done quite a few N54 heads now on our Centroid :-)

A proper video will happen eventually...

    Thanks for the video.

At the beginning of this year I was told by your colleague Mourad that you are "currently working on a resolution to the whole stage two problem" and have two N54 heads in your shop right now. Do you have any new information to share regarding the different cylinder head options?

There wasn't really a problem, just a problem choosing a price as this does not fall into our typical Stage 1,2,3 format. (we were not offering uprated valve springs/retainers/valves)

These heads work really well :-)

It's gonna vary depending on your turbo setup/octane of fuel/etc etc. But if you want a "baseline", Dzenno dyno'd his RB setup that had a ported cylinder head. He dyno'd at 553 WHP/631 WTQ while running 22.5psi midrange; Bren Tuning was able to tune an RB 135 to 491 WHP/515 WTQ (no idea how much boost, but I'd assume ~21).

Lots of variables here like different dynos and unknown how both tunes were setup, but obviously the gains will be more significant were greater airflow is necessary (high power single turbo or the Vargas Stage 3s).

Dzenno figured before about 30hp inrease over what he was doing before headwork, but not sure this is the same head job.

Not all port work is equal. We have sold 8 N54 heads, 2 to guys who at the least lurk/post occasionally on the forums and the others to non internet 'racing' wholesale clients. Racing folks don't share numbers for obvious reasons, but they have run our S54, S62, M50, S14, M20, S38 heads in the past with great success so they come back for more.

We have been porting BMW heads since the 1980s and we are the only person in the world (that I know of, haha) that has done extensive development with a machine like our Centroid. Click here to enlarge We have ported 100s of BMW heads right here in house in sunny South Philly.

We do not have before after whp figures yet. I will share the flow % improvements in the official thread that will be posted when I get the proper video done ;-)

have you decided to offer valves/springs/retainers?

I'm a little confused as to why you haven't haha

Easier said than done - the valves and springs are quite unique - the R&D for something like this take a bit more time. We will get it all sorted eventually Click here to enlarge

I thought that alex@ABR had just about had a set made up? hm :/

I mean.. Dzenno (and others as far as i'm aware) managed to get a set of valves made up with little fuss lol

Fair enough when you're a big business with a lot of OTHER projects on the go at once, less-profitable things like N54 valvetrains get sent to the bottom of the queue i guess haha

Thanks for your reply. In February Mourad indeed told me that "The problem is that no one makes valves and springs for the motor yet so we are producing our own. The stock valves are 5.5mm stems with a sodium fill. We need to develop a totally new set along with the springs."

My initial query however was a different one: I saw on your website that only stage 1, stage 1+ and stage 3 are offered, and no stage 2. So I assume that there exists indeed a stage 2 - could you confirm this and go into more details as to the difference of such stage 2 to stage 1/1+ and 3?

From your website there are currently only details about the above mentioned stages 1, 1+ and 3, but no mention of a stage 2:

    1) Stage 1 performance cylinder head (1.299 USD):

    • Complete Disassembly & Cleaning

    • Blueprinting and reconditioning of Your Valves
    • Balancing of Your OE Springs
    • Trueness Checked & Resurfaced Mating Surface
    • Unshrouding of Valves / throat cut
    • Attention to Potential Hot-spot Areas and Chamfering

    2) Stage 1+ performance cylinder head (1.499 USD):

    • Comprehensive Leak, Crack & Pressure Test

Not sure what those guys are doing but generally speaking it's easy to 'get' springs and valves.

We have ~$75k in springs/valves/retainers/seats for every other BMW engine in stock. We work with possibly the best valvetrain engineer and manufacturer so we have a unique standard that is pretty hard to meet. I'm really not sure how many spring/valve kits we have sold, but '100s' is a fair estimate.

Also, demand (and frankly, need) is very low so its not at the top of the list.

Sure, I will do all that with the official 'launch' very soon :-) For now, I might just drop Stage 3 and call it something else.

    Springs, valves, titanium retainers, keepers

Demand (and need) is surely set to increase with all the built/big single/big twin N54's hitting the road in the next 3-12mo too... and otherwise people wanting that last bit.

can totally understand it from your businesses perspective though, especially when there's already at least one shop working on it Click here to enlarge

Finally, I think this is our first 'official' head release. We need a thread with all the common parts people upgrade and links of the options to their own thread.

This is definitely something for you N54 guys to look into. More power with less boost.

@Mike@VAC think you can improve the S65 heads?
