BMW says no 2014 F26 X4 M for fear of X6 M cannibalization?
The BMW X4 is coming likely next year. With it will come several model variants including an X4 xDrive35i with an N55 inline-6 turbo motor and an X4 xDrive28i model with the N20 turbocharged four-cylinder motor. Expect the SUV to follow the X3's drivetrain but with the M3/M4 coming up it begs the question whether the X3 or X4 will get the upcoming M3/M4 S55 turbocharged 3.0 liter inline-6 six cylinder direct injected motor for a 430 horsepower X4 M model.
The answer? No. Why? Because BMW does not want to hurt the lucrative pie that is the X6 M. BMW product communications manager Bernhard Ederer stated, “The question is what customers are we talking to? And are we talking to someone that is [currently] willing and able to afford [an X6M]?”
BimmerBoost can see Ederer's point but at the same time the whole reason for the X4 existing in the first place is because the X6 is a success. Would the same logic about chewing into X6 sales not follow with the X4's existence in the place? Furthermore, why even build an M4 if the customers can opt for an M6?
Obviously the M3/M4 despite being less powerful are lighter and more fun to drive. That is exactly what an X4 M would be. The argument is practice just does not hold up with the X4 existing in the first place. Additionally, with how heavy the BMW X6 is the X4 honestly makes more sense as an M model and would be more affordable.
Rather than looking at it as X6 M sales being lost BMW should look at it as having a better example of an M SUV in an X4 M with new sales gained. Also, BMW would then have an answer for the Audi RS Q3 and upcoming Mercedes GLA45 AMG. Do not rule out an X4 M just yet especially if X4 sales take off.

That makes no f*cking sense. If what he says is true...why did they build the X4 in the first place...wouldn't the base X4 cannibalize X6 sales?
X4M would be such a better vehicle than the fat whale X6M.
Anyways I don't believe Bernhard, they will build any car if they think it will sell. A X4M will sell.

They are going to build it. He statement is to cast doubt on the F26 X4 M, to get the pipeline filled with orders for the X4 28i and X4 35i.
The buyer for an X6 M is predominantly male to the tune of 98%, and he is cross-shopping the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and an outlier in the ML63 AMG. He most likely is not going to look at an X4 M. Bernard Ereder is pulling punches here.
The X4 M is a way to bring more women into M cars since they typically predominantly sold to males. He is not going say the F26 X4 M is coming which would cannibalize the sales of the base X4's.
Don't pay attention to his statement. The Porsche Macan Turbo S, Mercedes-Benz GLA AMG and even talk of a small Jeep SRT model means BMW will participate in the small performance segment.

Sticky, you are correct in your assumption. BMW learned a lot from the E53 X5 focus groups, meaning the owners wanted somethingI more extreme than E53 X5 4.8is.
It had to have more power, better handling, distinctive styling and seating for four so no bench seating.
That is where the E71 X6 came from, extreme X5 owners. A niche within a niche if you will. BMW product planners believed they could move around 70, 000 over the lifespan of the E71X6.
About 10, 000 units for world consumption yearly. Last year total production of the E71 X6 has reached 130, 000 units. The industry took notice.
This surprised even BMW, and the F26 X4 was already deep in development. The industry was watching and Mercedes-Benz has a copy coming to market. As does Audi with their reactionary business model, it will be based on the Porsche designed chassis used for the Cayenne.
The industry watched as BMW created a new small, very focused niche that is very lucrative. Now other manufacturers have X6 competitors coming to market. Even Honda tried, and failed miserably with the ZDX or whatever it was called. And was the worst selling car in America last year.
The F26 X4 will sell very well. And F26 X4 M will lead its segment also. But the upcoming Porsche Macan will be a serious contender. The BMW F26 X4 M is coming soon to a dealer near you. As Yoda said "patience, you must learn patience".

Exactly if it was stupid Audi and Mercedes would not be scrambling to copy. Notice they are not scrambling to copy the 5 GT.
