Transmission Options for the N54 6spd Auto

I know threads like this have popped up several times but I hope to help drive a solution!
I am flirting with my 6spd auto and am trying to build a game plan on what to do if it fails.

    Options:
6spd manual - Seeing this as a real option

Level 10 - Remember LostMarine having this and sounded legit - Seen others after having issues. Have these issues been resolved?

Program - Already have the Alpina flash but have heard that the hardware on the stock trans is good enough if programed properly - Any leads or ideas on how to crack this?

Other trans - Are there any other auto trans that could bolt up to the car? Understanding that programing, drive shaft, and other mods would be likely

I've yet to hear of anything that works. SIKH was our most recent last hope with that 512 (?) build but I hear after a few failed attempts he gave up and parted out. Click here to enlarge

Yes the soulution is simple bro. Simply buy a MT next time. Anyways, in all seriousness, I'm still baffled by the fact that there is no Auto transmission upgrade option for the N54 with the power its currently making. Very sad...

I suggested using software similar to world community grid to crack the TCU (brute force). Can anyone comment on this idea?

It would be nice if Ford would make a version of the hp21 like they did the 26, that way we could just buy an upgrade kit for it like the guys with a hp26 can with the 6r60 ford trans.

I would also like to know what issues people have had with the level 10 upgrade and whether or not they had the alpina flash

    There is no solution.

The Level 10 rebuild amounts to nothing more than putting a broken trans back together so it works again not one that is designed to handle big power.

A manual swap, sure, this is 'a' solution but not a proper one.

I can relate to transmission woes.

This is the ~9 repetitive thread on this topic. At this point you can:
    1. Trans Swap & Reprogram to the 335 6MT or DCT
    2. Keep rebuilding your OEM 6AT to OEM spec or Level10 (Only semi-proven options, not 100% proven as an upgrade)
    3. Hope & wait on @alex@ABRhouston to build a new bellhousing that will open up non-BMW used AT trans options

I believe @enrita has the Level 10 transmission and he hasn't had any issues with it running upgraded turbos.

I genuinely believe the Alpina flash should be sufficient provided you use common sense and do not launch the car at every given opportunity. Worst case, 335i 6ATs are quite cheap. Click here to enlarge

I run vargas stage II's with a level ten and alpina flash and my car shifts great. I run mostly G5iso on map 3 with usually between a 65 and 75 meth additive. Running 60/40 e85/93 and its very strong. Never even a hiccup out of the trans. With stage 2 or rb's this build is fine in my book.

Quaife 69G sequential trans? You will be seeing a VAC supplied one in a very popular N54 car very soon ;-)

Seriously though, that is for racing use only.

We sell those too (our client Lowe Group Racing won GTS4 nationals with one we supplied), but for this beast N54 a 69G is plenty. Frankly, the 69G is a great value - every client that I sold one to LOVES it. This week at the shop we have one going in a SMG E46M race car - can't wait to get the owner's initial feedback ;-)

I remember seeing a m3 video that had a drenth sequential but thing was a straight up race car. Could be a option for higher hp cars. Maybe like vargas stage3 or single turbo cars could go this route?

I am running RB's with the Alpina flash on my trans.

The only issue that I have had so far, I was doing a log, rolled into 2nd hard, had really bad wheel spin and stayed in it. Well, the trans shifted from second, to third, and then back to second... It held it there while it was figuring things out and then back to normal. I have read that this can happen and it is normal for any power level as the trans just gets confused for a moment.

In any case, I feel like a real solution is needed. Six speed would be fun but not the best solution for boosted cars.

Yeah that's a bad thing. I had mine kickdown before I blocked it and while spraying meth and my car did not like it. I blew fuses and the way it was running I thought I had blown my motor. I have been happy with my trans. so far and understand the issue you had. That is the same thing mine would do when at the track. Happened several times where it would shift itself early and then kickdown. That may be a sign because it wasn't long after that when it started going. Car would no longer shift to 4th under high load conditions.

This has happened to me 2x rolling 2nd on the street but never at the track. The first time was over a year ago on the stock turbos... Hope for the best and prepare (trying with this thread) for the worst.

For those runs I was running JB4/G5ISO/26.2 and the BMS Low Load flash. I just updated to 26.6 and the latest Low Load and the car feels a bit stronger!

On your level 10 build - Could you share exactly what you had done, what it cost, and how long the car was down? Just trying to get a true idea on what to expect.

    Thanks,

About 6k including install. I bought a trans. online from lkq so I could use my car in the meantime. I used the bulletproof rebuild kit and sent them my converter and valvebody. Took about 2weeks total time. I would call Pat at level10 and at least talk to him. I'm happy with it and with the alpina flash it shifts pretty quickly. Its no dct but way better than stock.

That does not include trans. I bought and install of that trans. Ipaid a little over 1500 for a trans. with 10k on it and install of that trans.
